This is way more than I expected..... Tom's new Webb has to be the Very Best I have ever played through.
I am still looking for the warning label that say's
"THIS PRODUCT IS KNOWN TO CAUSE P.E."

Hi Mike
I have know Idea what the retail price of this Webb is as Tom has never mentioned it.
I paid 2200.00 and after playing through it for a few hours I would have paid 3000.00 for it  |

It is an incredible sounding amp. The all round sound is huge with a wonderful bottom end. I don't think Peavey have to worry too much about the new Webb amp. It is a boutique hand-built amp and will not be mass produced on the same scale as Peavey's. Price-wise there is no contest. Peavey products will always win hands down. I have seven Peavey amps.
The all round build quaility of the new Webb is just superb (I have even had the chassis out to check out the components and board layout). I would echo Larry's comment and confirm that it is the best steel amp I've played through - period. The EQ variation is amazing, and the ability to 'tune' the cabinet by opening/closing front and rear ports of the internal speaker enclosure is the icing on the cake.
Expensive? Not neccessarily. You generally get what you pay for in life, and this product oozes class. I love mine.

Beautiful Webb you have there. Also made by a great guy Tom Bradshaw. I have a real old '78 Webb. Cosmeticly, mines the worst looking one in Nashville. But she still sounds like a million bucks! Nick

Here's my tweed covered new Webb with B/W 1502 4ohm speaker.
Here's the amp with the supplied cover. It is made from an extremely tough reinforced PVC fabric - the type used for gymnasium mats and truck tarpaulins.

I own 2 Webbs purchased from Jim Webb shortly before he passed. He was a great guy. There are both Blue 6-14-E with JBL's.
Seeing the newer models Tom is building, he certainly looks like he's maintained, and even gone beyond the quality of the older versions... at least from the photos.
Couple of questions: Where does the heat go? The back seems to be entirely covered. Where is the electrical cord? and does the back have easy access to store it. I'm sure it can be done, but the photos of the newer models doesn't show it. I'm just curious.
BTW: I always play in Stereo, which is why I originally got 2 Webbs. Over the years, I like the sound of ONE Webb and a Fender Deluxe. For some reason, that combo kicks butt.
PS: There is no better amp for PSG then a Webb. Yes they're expensive, but nothing else compares. They offer complete control and a wide range of a fat sweet tone. Just my personal opinion. |

Jeff, your question about "Where does the heat go?" is a very good one. It cannot be seen in the photo of the amp's back, but there is a gap between the top back board and the chassis. In the photo of the amp's back you can see the rather large heat sink. Note that it is exposed at the opening. There is also a slight opening at the bottom of that top back-board. Air can circulate through there also.
The section of the back-board that is wider, permits the extracting of the power cord. This area is actually a better storage place for the power cord than simply having it hang into the bottom of the amp and perhaps end up denting or puncturing the speaker's paper cone with its pointed end.
It should be mentioned that many amps come as piggy-back units where the chassis is enclosed in rather "cramped" quarters. Jim Webb built a lot of those two-piece units over the years. I don't believe he ever had a problem with over-heating, except when he was experimenting with amp designs away back in the early '70s. He corrected that problem by using the larger heat sink that is still in the current models I'm building. The current one-piece design offers as much air circulation room as any of those two-piece "piggy-back" units.
Regardless, I am going to do some testing to see what the temperature is in the chassis compartment and will report back to you as to the results. Frankly, I suspect I'll discover that the current chassis area will not result in any more heat being created than would be the case if the amp didn't have the speaker chamber.

Thanks for the quick informative reply. For those of us that own the older Webbs, do you offer any upgrade options to add any of your new features?
When you get back with a reply, some photos with the back removed would further help understand your feedback. I'm trying to picture in my mind how that cord is stored.
FYI: Have you entertained the thought of hooking up with D2F Covers as an add-on? A Webb Amp is worth being well protected... and having a Webb logo would be cool to. Just a thought. Also... thanks for taking the opportunity to keep Webb in the PSG world. |
