Jeff, I'm not familiar with the old style MSA Bellcranks, but if you have a set screw in them, then I'd definitely want a milled flat surface where the set screw can go down and lock up tight on. That prevents (on round crossrods) the posibility of the bellcranks slipping around on the shaft, under a load.

Hope that helps some. Cool

Jeff-I made some crossrods for one of my MSA guitars once and I used aluminum bars, on a s12 8/5 universal, it cut the weight by about 6 Lbs, and I cut another 2+ lbs by using aluminum pull rods, this and with new aluminum stock legs cut the MSA from 39lbs to about 30 lbs, about the weight of the Carter but with a Wood lacquer body. Very nice. But it is a lot of work....al.SmileSmile

Jeff, your MSA crossrods are perfectly round, and the bell cranks slide onto the rod and tighten to the crossrod with a set screw through the separated ends that should be positioned behind the crossrod (towards the tuning keys).

You don't need any flat spots, and I see no advantage to adding any.

I played MSA's for 27 years.

The cross rods should be made of .375" (3/8") stainless steel rod. ("303" stainless works well.)

I also agree with John, who said...
