It gets hot in Los Angeles, and I frequently wear shorts. But then the knee levers feel cold and uncomfortable against my bare skin, so I got some sticky backed Velcro, and put the fuzzy end on all the knee levers. Now I can play in my shorts with no discomfort.

Clever Mike, but don't your hairy legs stick to the velcro? Razz My Carter has sharp edges on the levers that are uncomfortable, even wearing long pants. Maybe I'll try your idea.

You have to use the fuzzy side, not the plastic side that grabs stuff (like hairy legs.)

Please, do us a favor. If you ever do a video or have your picture taken, wear something other than shorts.

Middle aged men have no idea how ridiculous they look to the rest of the world when they wear shorts! Laughing

Donny,
It appears that you've not lived in southern California (or Florida, or the deep south in general). Shorts are not optional. Very Happy

You should see me in a bikini. Evil Twisted

Seriously, Larry is right. EVERBODY wears shorts out here during the summer time.

Several years ago we had a 6 week spell where the temperature never got be4low 100, even at night, and one day it reached 117 and the asphalt on the freeways started to melt and got all sticky and gooey
and all the card got stuck.

We have great winters, but we pay for it in the summertime.

Must be nice... You're describing our Spring and Fall!

It's 106 in the shade on my front patio right now! 20 feet up my shaded weather station probe says 103. Devil

(sigh)

Yeah, when riding a bike, washing the car, or working in the garden. But if you're making a steel video IN YOUR HOUSE (which is probably air conditioned), is it asking too much, really?

Oh, never mind.

I guess some steelers are just proud of their "Ultimately Comfortable" fashion statement...which is somewhere between Homer Simpson and Larry The Cable Guy.

Sad

One of my "pet peaves" with PSG manufacturers indeed. Sharp corners on knee levers AND pedals to me, is a step backwards. Yet guitar after guitar, year after year suffers (IMO) with this or other maladies.

I can just imagine what people would say when buying a new car if the brake and accelerator pedal had sharp edges and/or are uncomfortable in other respects.

IMO, Sho-Bud gets the nod on knee levers. The new MSA Milleniums second. Carter gets the nod on their first pedals. Why do other PSG manufacturers not tackle this and come up with more comfortable and ergonomically designed knee levers and pedals?

Mike makes an excellent point on "cold" knee levers and shorts. I hate that initial shock when I am wearing shorts. Or worse barefooted. Now that can kill ya! Mad

It amazes me to see the inordinate amount of time and costs manufacturers (and some players) spend on esthetics, when there is often little to NO effort spent on solving long standing aggravations, when it comes to our beloved instrument. Confused

But then, these things do not bother many. And for them, I say you are indeed blessed. Praise Jesus.

c.

Hello,
I had a knee lever LKL that had a sharp edge that hit my knee exactly where I had knee surgery and was very uncomfortable. Cured it by going to hardware store and getting about 4" piece of clear plastic tubing big enough to slide snugly over the offending knee lever. End of problem and it even adds a bit of cushioning.
Good Luck,
Wayne

I've never done it to a knee lever, but you can get cans of this rubber liquid that you use to dip handles on your tools into and it dries to give a plastic grip. I saw a steel once where the guy did this and it was quite comfortable. It is a little bit thick and gives a little bit of a cushion when hitting the lever hard and fast.

Just to be a pain, but WHY should an expensive (usually) steel guitar have rough knee lever edges, so as to elicit these comments?

After all, most everyone here espouses how great their steels are. Can't be that great if the very physical act of playing it causes such discomfort.

Maybe ya just hafta to build up callouses on your inner and outer legs? Just like guit-players eventually have to do on their fingertips. I've experienced the same thing, friends. Something oughta be done - like rounded knee shafts. And make them much longer, by 2-3 inches, at least. It would eliminate the need for those extensions. What's wrong with these builders, anyway???
Very Happy

sorry Mike,( buddy ) a dollar short and a day late..
Added Velcro two years ago for the exact same reason on RKR .

another two cents..

Some folks buy BRAND NEW GUITARS for the BIG bucks that look like Guitars from 1952 with all the nicks and scratches !PRE Abused if you will. I don't see any problem with the top Steel manufacturers adding VELCRO to the knee levers, it's become MOD ! ( that means fashionable)

hey, Honda made that little Van type car painted half PRIMER ! Anything goes !

Another very comfortable option is the foam insulation tubes that are available for water pipes~~ courtesy of Rick Schmidt!

I've been using what Jim's talking about for awhile now. It's really great if you have a heavy action on some levers (Like mine)that you don't want to make any compromises on.
