I found Ronnie Milsaps Night Things at the library, and 20/20 vision in the $1 bin at the record store. Both are great albums with really nice steel on em.
Both albums list the "steel guitar" as being played by Lloyd Green, John Hughey, Pete Drake and Dick Overbry. I am not a haggard old vet who can name the steeler in a few notes, but to my admittedly uneducated ears it doesnt sound like four differnt steelers on the album. In fact it sounds to me like all John Hughey all the time. Can anyone shed some light on this for me as to who actually played pedal steel on those two albums and as to why the credits list the same four players for boths sessions? Was there just a team of A-list players who were credited regardless of who actually played?
Thanks for your help. |

Fairly certain that it was Lloyd Green on the song "Daydreams About Night Things." If the song "Pure Love," is on there, I think Lloyd was the steeler on it too.
Ronnie Milsap had some great songs!
It has been so long, I can't remember other songs. You got a list of the tune?

Thanks Terry,
Heres the track listing for night things:
1. (After Sweet Memories) Play Born To Lose Again
2. Who'll Turn Out The Lights (In Your World Tonight)
3. Daydream About Night Things
4. I'm No Good At Goodbyes
5. Just In Case
6. Remember To Remind Me (I'm Leaving)
7. Borrowed Angel
8. Love Takes A Long Time To Die
9. (Lying Here With) Linda On My Mind
10. I'll Be There (If You Ever Want Me)
#2 really sounded like Hughey to me. bar shiver on 8 and 5 with the A pedal creeping in. but as i said I am a novice player and listener. I know Lloyd Green has a very diverse stylistic and tonal range, so i guess I wont be too surprised if its all Lloyd. Kinda weird to list the same four steelers for both albums and not specify who did what where. Maybe both albums were done in the same session?
Heres the track listing for 20/20 Vision:
1 20/20 Vision 3:05
2 Lovers, Friends and Strangers 2:52
3 Not That I Care 3:18
4 Lovesick Blues 3:24
5 You Snap Your Fingers (And I'm Back in Your Hands) 3:19
6 Looking Out My Window Through the Pain 3:56
7 What Goes on When the Sun Goes Down 2:51
8 You've Still Got a Place in My Heart 3:24
9 I Got Home Just in Time to Say Goodbye 3:05
10 (I'm A) Stand by My Woman Man 2:56
really really good songs , recordings, vibe and STEEL, imho.
Cheers. |

I don't know about those cuts. Somewhere here I have the LP that includes "Don't You Ever Get Tired Of Hurting Me" and Hal Rugg plays on that album. _________________ Bill Cunningham

Its just weird to me that we have two albums both credited to the same four steelers and stylisticly, the steel as sounds as if it was done by ONE steeler.
Im guessing albums (and credits) were done a bit differently back when these two albums were made and credit may have een somewhat arbitrarily assigned?
again, the credited steelers are Lloyd Green, John Hughey, Pete Drake, and Dicky Overbry on both albums.
Did they used to do two albums in a single session back then maybe? |

Could just be that the artist and producer like to use the same musicians on each album. Happens a lot today with the "A Team".
On the 20/20 vision album, a lot of it sounds like Hughey to me (especially the song 20/20 Vision). |
