| Before I reloaded Xp recently, when I would click on a link (using Internet Explorer 7), the window would open up maximized. Now they open up in a smaller window. How do you get them to always open maximzed like they used to? I can't seem to find where to do this. |

| Drag the edges with the mouse to the size you want it. Then close and re-open it. Do not use the maximize button. |

| But, I used to be able to open another window and it would automatically come up maximized. I should be able to get that back. |

| That's what I was saying. If you drag the window with the mouse to maximize it, it will open maximized the next time you open a window. If you use the maximize button, it won't remember the bigger size. |

Have you tried what I suggested. That has been the solution for Windows for a long time.
Drag the edges of the window back to the edge of your screen with your mouse.
Close the window, and after that the window will open at the larger size.
Your system remembers the window size that you last used, but not if you use the maximize button. |

Ok Jon, I just tried your method by clicking on the "Links" button at the top of the forum page. Came up with a new wimdow about half size. I stretched the window in all directions (as you suggest) to make a full size wimdow. So far, So good. I closed the window and reopened it. It came back up with the smaller window size, so that doesn't work (or doesn't work in all situations). It seemed there was a setting in Internet Explorer or in Xp to make all windows open maximized, but I can't find it.

But if you do a lot of surfing, this can lead to having to do this 10, 20 , 100 times. And it seems like a pain to visit a website where you link off to several other pagers and have to go through this ritual. It may be a website you only visit once but you visit 20 or 30 links off that page (say a news page) and spend more time expanding the links than actually reading the content. |

You seem to be implying that when you click on hyperlinks in your browser, or on your desktop, a new browser opens for each one. Is this in fact correct?
If your browser is Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7.0 it has a feature called tabs, borrowed from Mozilla's Firefox browser. There is a setting in your MSIE Internet Options to allow links to open in a new tab in the same browser, just like us Firefox users already do.
If you do not have MSIE 7 you may want to download and install Firefox and import your cookies and "Favorites" into it. Firefox's options are under Tools > Options. You can set your preference for how links open and if new tabs get focus or now.

In that case I suspect that your computer has some corrupted system files or Registry settings. There are a few things you can do to try to correct that situation, should it exist.
For Windows 2000 or XP, presuming that you possess the Windows CD, insert it into the CD drive, then visit Start > Run (or combine the "Windows" key + R). When the Run input field appears you should type the following command:
SFC/scannow
A system file integrity check will begin. If corrupted files are found the SFC will open a dialog box asking for the location of the system files store. Direct it to the drive letter of the CD drive containing the Windows CD. It will fetch a fresh copy and continue scanning, stopping each time it needs to replace a file. Continue assisting it until it completes and disappears. Reboot, then go directly to Windows Update Services (WUS) and re-download all critical patches, as recommended by WUS, rebooting as instructed.
If, after running the SFC, you should encounter a problem accessing Windows Updates, either manually or automatically, open a DOS window (Run > CMD) and type the following commands at the blinking cursor:
net stop wuauserv
Press ENTER
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll
Press ENTER
net start wuauserv
Press ENTER
EXIT
Press ENTER
The fastest way to get to Windows Update Services is via the Start Menu, go up the right side and find the link to Windows or Microsoft Update and click on it. Internet Explorer will open to the WUS web page. When the page loads click on the Express button and download/install all listed updates.
This action will usually fix a lot of minor issues people have as they use their Windows PCs over time.

Exactly. And I noticed it after a recent upgrade to IE. I thought I already had version 7 but it said it upgraded it to 7. The version I am running is :
7.0.5730.13
I remember the tabs thing, but that has disappeared. |

Since Internet Explorer is an integral part of the Windows OS, and the tabs have disappeared, it follows that your browser and OS have become corrupted. I recommend that you run the System File Checker, as described in my previous reply.

The setting for Tabbed Browsing is Tools/Internet Options/
Towards the bottom of the General Tab there is a heading called "Tabs". Click the settings button and see if the "Enable Tabbed Browsing" box is checked.
If it isn't, then check it and restart Internet Explorer.
If it is checked, uncheck it, close the browser, relaunch the browser, check the "Enable Tabbed Browsing" box. Close then reopen the browser. |

It was checked and I followed your directions. Nothing has changed. When I get time, I will try Wiz's suggestion.
Something interesting. I have the Forum listed in my Favorites pull down menu. It has an icon next to it that looks like 4 or 5 lines (representing the strings on a PSG?), but during this session, I visited a link on you tube from a post, and now that icon is the you tube icon (avatar?). But the forum still comes up when the link is clicked. Odd 
I just checked to see if the icon was stll changed (it was) and also noticed the icon for my bank is now a you tube icon, and I haven't visited my bank site in a week. |

Icons can get flushed out of your cache and the system goes with the closest it can find.
If you want to make sure it doesn't change, you can put a copy of the icon on your hard drive and point your shortcut to it. If you still have a problem you can make the shortcut "read-only". |
