Most recent news (not very) I know of is that he was living in Florida near KingSnake Recording studios, but now that the owner, Bob Greenlee, has passed, I'm not sure if he's still there.

About 4 years ago, Sonny was on his way to Massachsetts for a gig, when his van broke down on I-95 in Connecticut. He called the Sunday evening jock at our station (WPKN), Bill Nolan, who sprang into action to rescue him, and get him on his way. Subsequently, there was an interview, where he was talking about what he was doing. There may be an aircheck available.

Other than that, he played on the theme for the TV series Firefly a few years ago.

He is a great player - love those turbans!

He plays in California quite a bit. He used to live here in Fresno years ago.

I think he lives in the bay area now because he is driven to gigs by his old lady in a Caddy. She usually runs around backstage screaming at him about his drinking and tells everybody "Don't give him any liquor!"... If he gets somebody to get him a bottle and then he gets drunk, he goes on stage and plays the worst stuff you ever heard... just pathetic. I would actually feel sorry for him.

On the other hand, if he is sober, he is absolutely incredible. He's got more stage presence and talent than I could ever have imagined. His steel playing is very much like a soul or R&B horn section.

At the start of his show he sits and sings and plays steel licks in between vocal phrases. Very casual.

Later in his show he stands and sings. His vocals are second to none, he's got great stage presence and the way he plays off the people is almost mesmorizing. Hopefully he gets off the sauce for good. He should listen to his old lady because he can be the best... or the worst!

He apparently is playing around Washington and Oregon. A Google News search for "Sonny Rhodes" showed this among other dates:
