Hi all,
I'm gonna pick up one of the less expensive resonator squarenecks while I'm in the US. I played a Gold Tone PBS mahogany today - and was quite impressed. It couldn't match against a Beard priced thrice as high but it sounded at least as good as an Andrews that was double the price (to my ears...).
But I have also heard good things about the Wechter/Scheerhorn mahogany 6510F squareneck which sells at about the same price and I really like the F-holes as far as appearance goes. Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to find one to try in New York so I'm asking you if anyone of you have had the chance to try the Wechter/Scheerhorn or ideally both that and the Gold Tone - which would you recommend?
My other question is if I should go with wood or metal body? I probably won't have the chance to try a Gold Tone with metal body but I think the more metal sound might appeal to me since I'm going for that rattling, banjo-like sound. So have anyone tried the squareneck metal body Gold Tone (GRS) or could anyone tell me aobut the difference between metal and wood bodys (I have actually never tried a squareneck metal body)?
Thanks - I really value your help!
Best,
Hans |

hans..i think it would be wise to play a metal body reso before you buy..i love the wood body sound, but don't care for the metal body because of the difference/lack of full low tone resonance and other tonal aspects. they are quite different. i would play both to see what you actually like...! |

Hi Chris
I would too But I probably won't get the chance and when I'm back in denmark the guitar is gonna be 2-3 times the price... But of course I'm a little worried to go with sonething I haven't tried (though it was some assurance that the wood Gold Tone sounded nice) - that's why I'm asking you guys
Thanks for the comments! Further opinions are very welcome!

Hans,
I think you would be equally satisfied with either the Gold Tone Paul Beard or Wechter-Scheerhorn resophonic guitars. They both represent a tremendous value in mid-priced acoustic lap steels. I own a W/S 6510F and love it, but am equally impressed by the Gold Tones I've played.
I personally prefer the sound of the wood body resonator guitars I've played over the metal body guitars, with the exception of the tricone style guitars, which are great for old style playing. If you play mostly unaccompanied blues, you might prefer a metal body, but I think the wood body guitars have a better tone and blend better with other instruments. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

It could be just my preference, but I when I bought my Wechter 6510F it was sitting in Gruen Music next to a couple of Goldtones, and it sounded much louder to me. It also has that sizzle people talk about. the only quirk I've noticed is that it likes D'Addario strings. The guitar doesn't sound nearly as good with GHS or Euphinon. You didn't mention what kind of music yiou planned to play on it. This is a great bluegrass instrument, I'm not sure it would be my preference for blues, or other kinds of music.
