In this video Bob Wills had two steel guitar players:
Who are the two steel guitar players? Punch here
Also what make of steel guitars are they playing?
I have always loved Western Swing. I grew up on the music of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.
Coincidentally, Bob Wills was born in Turkey, Texas in West Texas about 15 miles away from where I was born. He was West Texas' claim to fame.

I don't know the names of the two steel players, but they both appear to be playing Fender pedal steels. Moved to Steel On The Web from Steel Without Pedals in the hopes that someone can help identify these players.

Actually, that is Gene Crownover with Reece...
Incidently, Gene was with Bob the longest, but most associate Leon, Herb, and Noel as his steel guitarists, due to them being with him in the "hey-day" of those classic recordings.
Gene Crownover has always been one of my favorite players. He did great backup work with some real swinging jazzy riffs.
If I had a time machine and could only go back to see one stellar evening with Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, it would be the era with Gene Crownover. As much as I love the 30's with Leon, the 40's with Herb and Noel (and would love to see each); Gene's playing during live performances in the 50's and 60's would have to be my favorite sound of the Playboys. |
