I had one when they first came out after seeing Buddy Emmons use one. Mine had a 5 positon switch with both in phase and out of phase sounds. The out of phase switch positions had considerably lower output and a bit more hum than the in phase positions. None of the switch positions gave me a sound close to my original Emmons Push Pull pickup so I swapped it back out for a regular pickup. My Pentad was purchased in the early 1980's.

Greg,Thanks I didn't realize that they were around that long,I assume the out of phase sounding like when a "Tele" is wired out of phase,A big cut in volume and very Boingy sounding?I would like to try one 5 sounds out of one pickup intrigues me,unless all 5 are unusable.

Chris,I never heard of them at all,I was checking the Emmons website and found them...I couldn't find a price either?I was wondering if there was another pickup on the market that does the split coil, full humbucking, and out of phase things that this pickup does?Stu Winking Winking

Stu, I bought a 1980 Emmons shorty with the Pentad pickups on it, and I have to say I liked the tone.
I've read several post here on the forum, where
players said they didn't like the pentad pups, but the tone on my shorty was one of the best I'd ever heard! I didn't use but two of the five switch positions, one for the emmons tone, and the other for a Brumley type sound. Ever heard Tracy's waltz
bu Tom Brumley, that's the tone I got with the other switch position. I really liked my Pentads!
seems like they were around $180 back then, not positive about that, but they were high.

Stu, I've got Pentads in my LeGrande SKH. I think it is an early 80s model. Like Terry said, I've only found two settings that I like. I am going to get my guitar overhauled, and I'm changing my pickups to Stock Emmons.

Stu,
Terry is right! These pickups provide a variety of tonal possibilities, and they are expensive! The last price I saw on them was $195.30 each. I have them on both necks of my 1979 Push/Pull, and they sound great on my guitar.
I have spoken to Ron, Jr at Emmons at length about them. They are made in house at Emmons just as the other Emmons pickup models are, and are wound on the same wide frame as the 106, 108, and 110 series humbuckers are. They are designated 102P.

The positions are as follows:
1. Single coil - Sharp highs and lows
2. Single Coil - Mellow highs and lows
3. Humbucking - Rich and Mellow
4. Out of Phase - Funky "tank" tone-(reduced output)
5. Out of Phase - Humbucking with thick body tone.

[/img]
The electrical properties for each position are as follows:
E9th Neck
1. 17.61K
2. 18.27K
3. 8.98K
4. 35.86K
5. 35.86K

C6th Neck
1. 19.64K
2. 18.93K
3. 9.65K
4. 38.55K
5. 38.55K

Goerge L also makes the 10-5 pickup that I hear is similar, although I have no personal experience with them.
Hope this helps,
Cheers!!
Benton
