I have remade Soft Rain, I changed the way I play it but not the video so some of the hand movements don't match up, my camera is in for as much need service.
It sounds much better if you use head phones..
I was inspired by Ron Elliott to learn this tune..

John,
I think you are suffering the same as me, I struggle getting the sound I hear from the Session 500, from the recording. I have just bought a Vox Valvetronix for next to nothing on fleabay and I'm hoping for bigger things with that. The sound that comes from the Vox is astounding.

Hi James , the sound in the room was fine, only the mic on the camera is not very good and overloaded and to make it worse when I uploaded it it went from bad to worse..
Anyway I'll get my studio up and running and do a proper job.
Your little amp sonds interesting, I have a Roland Cube 60 I think they are on the same lines,
I get on fine with the Nashville 112, not too heavy and sounds great once you sort the settings.. thanks James.. |

John, I have been looking forward to hearing a tune of yours on youtube for quite some time. I hope you will be satisfied with your version of Farewell Party. It sounded quite good even with the basic recording setup you were using in the test version.
True, you can't go wrong with the NV 112. Takes some knob-twisting. Hit them on a good day and they sound sweet. |

Hi Bent, how are things with you. how did the trip to Norway go. Are you up and running with the mixer now.
I sold my mixer to a guy in Spain so I will be buying a new one next week, then I will get the song down and post them.
The nashville amp is very good but I have had some problems getting a good tone, so I changed the speaker with a Blue Marvel I had in a small cab that I used in Spain and now I getting the sound I like, the new speaker had been broken in with all the work I did over there..The only work I'm doing in the UK is a jam every week and the odd few gigs ..
Something I did notice when I tried the new speaker I connected to the amp before I removed the old one, now people say that they get a hum from the 112 but with the speaker out side the amp there was no hum at all. I think that the speaker has some affect on the reverb tank, maybe the magnet is too close to the reverb...John |

John,
For what it's worth, I liked your sound and thought it was OK. I relize that camcorder mics don't give the best quality. But I did think you played real good on Soft Rain.

Thanks Nick, it really got me down, I know my sound is pretty good and a few players from the UK at a steel meeting came up and remarked on the tone. but as you say the mic on the camera are pretty poor.
I will redo it as soon as I get my new mixer.
I don't want record it and then mime to the track, I would rather do it live as I belive that is the only way you can tell if someone is good or not ...John |

Hi John, thanks for asking. My trip went just great. One of my objectives was to meet and listen/talk to Norwegian steel players and boy did I meet'em ..18 in all which is super for little Norway. Plus, I met one of your countrymen, Steve Conway. Steve is a super-nice guy and a cool cat on the steel.
The pic below is one of my favorites, none other than Egil Skjelnes there beside me.
The mixer, I have figured it out..simple is the key. Like you said, just run a dry mix into the PC and do your editing there. Everything is so overwhelming and I have so many irons in the fire, so there is not enough time left over to master it even half ways. Right now my head is spinning with ideas to build steel #2 and maybe even 3.
Thanks again for your reply. We'll have to get together again on email.
BTW, how is out buddy Dave Seddon doing? It is way too long since we heard from him. I have a standing request for a song from him, and his home renovation project can't take 6 months to do? Tell him to take a break and do some more youtube stuff for us...
take care my friend
Bent
