I've had a Goldtone LS-6 for several years now and I'm wondering if anyone has experimented with a replacement pickup like the Lollar Chicago Steel.

Perhaps Jason Lollar would know, but I doubt there are many people who own both the Lollar pickup and the Goldtone steel (other than you, of course). What sort of feedback are you looking for? It looks like it would fit, and would almost certainly be a better sounding pickup than what's in there currently.

I have an Oahu Tonemaster that was missing its faceplate. The Goldtone is very close to the Tonemaster. I was able to buy a faceplate from Goldtone. I called Jason Lollar to ask about a pickup. He has a Chicago Steel pickup that drops right in to the Goldtone. It sounds great.

I don't have the Lollar pup, but am currently using the stock pup. I'm looking for feedback about a comparison between the stock pup and various replacements that may have been tried.

As an example, I put a Dimarzio VV Tele rear pup in it at one time and eventually found it to be too "shrill" in the guitar, not to mention the fact that I hacked up a bizarre system to get it into the guitar that wasn't very stable (it had to do with velcro and a slab of plastic pickguard material.)

The Lollar is $140 and if it's only a little better than stock, I'll hold off. If it's a lot better than stock, I send in my money ASAP. I'm just hoping someone else has been the guinea pig in this and not me Wink

Do you have the Lollar pup installed and if so, how does it compare to the original pup?

Unfortunately the Tonemaster was missing the faceplate and all the electronics when I bought it. I had to put all new parts in it so I have nothing to compare it to. This Tonemaster has a lot of sustain and sounds good even unplugged. The Lollar pickup is great, but how much better than the Goldtone pickup I couldn't say. I have 2 Lollar pickups in 2 different steels. The extra magnets make them sound really good. If you go for the Lollar Chicago Steel, you will have to specify that it is for a Goldtone as I believe the mounting plate is different for the Goldtone.

Thanks for the info!

My understanding is that forum member Rick Aiello builds an excellent replacement pickup for the Goldtone stock set-up. I've heard nothing but raves.

Actually ... I just hot-rodded a friend of mine's Gold Tone ... with NIBs ...

Howard, Gerald and Mike N ... remember the "Hat Man" from Georgia ... at the Summitt Mr. Green ...

http://www.hsga.org/forum/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1183414138

He had sent it to Lindy Fralin ... who rewound it ... and put in some new alnico bars ...

He wasn't happy at all ... so I removed the alnico bars ... and built a NIB fixture and attached it to the coil.

In fact ... I just heard from him the other day ...

Quote:
Rick,

Gold Tone is doing great.

The tone is HUGE!

I'm sure the rewind had something to do with it, but I'm convinced that the mags were crucial

I read the thread about the rewind/magnets. I love the Fralin's I have in my Strat (Vintage Hot/Vintage Hot/ Steel Pole 42).
