Some bands place the steel guitar on the right side
of the stage, facing out toward the audience while others have them set up on the left side. Once in a blue moon, you'll see one set up right smack in the middle.

WHAT is YOUR PREFERENCE? Do you have an inspirational spot? Is there a location YOU hate?
Do you prefer to face EAST or South or whatever?

WHY?

Steel guitar feng shui; Now there's a concept!

I personally don't care, though I prefer not to be right next to the drummer on a small stage; cymbals tend to be right at ear level and I can do without one a foot or two from my head!

One year John Hughey had the tallest "riser" on Vince Gill's stage set (and it was up there); they took to calling it Mt. Hughey! Cool

Any position is OK with me; however, if you'd have it in the band, make room for it on the stage.

The best position that I had on stage was right in back of the hot female singer on a short riser at a Always Patsy Cline gig. She wore a see through in the third set with the spot sillouetting her from the front.

Of course I'd be happy to be there at all, but stage right - it is easier to glance across the stage from this placement, IMO. Cool Also, it's harder to get poked in the eye with a fiddle bow on that side ...

Of course you could carry it all over the stage and plop it down anywhere and lean it forward and stand up while you play.
