I had my first review of this new CD today.Without any doubt a work of art and by far the best CD I have heard in years.
We have waited a long time for an artist to stand up and put old Country and Western back on the map.
IMHO.....Patty Loveless is the one that is going to do this.Patty and Gordy made their choice out of 500songs and they (IMO) did a super job.
A couple of these songs are floating around on YouTube.Do a search and convince yourself.
I will be one of the first that is going to buy this "super cd" when it comes out.

Patty's work is always superb. I predict it will get rave reviews and be totally ignored by corporate

I hate to say it but I think you're probably right about that. But there are other ways to get music out there these days and I think they're going to promote it pretty well. |

My friend at a local radio station
let me listen to Patty's new CD.
It is an excellent CD, tons of
steel guitar.
Without a doubt its her best ever.

Hey Clyde,
You are probably very right! Fortunately, the hard road she walked after leaving the Wilburn Brothers prepared Patty for life without corporate radio.
She has always been one of my favorites and I hope they have a tour date in my part of the world. My Dear Wife and I are already on the list for her new album (err...CD) and we can hardly wait to see her live again.

All three songs she did on the televised part of the Opry are from the new CD. If anyone's interested the Opry spot reruns on GAC tomorrow (Tuesday 9/9) at 7pm and 11pm (Central) and the next day at 6pm. |

We already have the precedent of her "Mountain Soul"
CD. An absolutely breathtaking piece of work, both in concept and performance. I consider it her career
highlight(so far). You never heard a cut on mainstream FM, although the bluegrass programs embraced it. I look at her as sort of a younger sister of Emmylou, who doesn't care so much about what the suits think, she is all about her craft.
There are artists out there with integrity, we need
to support them. I intend to buy this CD, probably
at a large store, where the sales will be tracked. _________________ LeGrande II, Nash. 112, Fender Twin Tone Master, Session 400, Harlow Dobro, R.Q.Jones Dobro |

It's a toss up for me... Patty Loveless or Holly Dunn...
Love 'em both for their voices and everything else attached
Good to know Patty is making new music. I'll be buying it as soon as it's available.
"Blue side of town", one of my favorites... |

I heard Crazy Arms a couple of nights ago on TV, and was underwhelmed. I thought the arrangement was too slow and sounded dirge-like.
On the other hand, the guy playing the Sierra sounded great. He played some very tasteful stuff. |

Hey......I think I worked on one of his guitars while I was @ Sierra in the late 70's. I never got the chance to meet him though. |

Thanks for all the kind words everybody...
I've gotta mention how great Al Perkins plays on the CD (he played on seven of the songs and I played on seven). I've been a huge fan of his for years and I don't think he's ever sounded better. He played "Crazy Arms" on the record and on the Opry I tried to recreate his great intro and solo (though I was just winging it on the rest of the song, the fills etc.).
We recorded more material than is on the album, I think there may be a couple of "bonus tracks" only available on "itunes". |

Pete,
I just saw that the album is available for pre-order at iTunes. The iTunes version is DRM-free and comes with a digital booklet and two bonus tracks: “We’ll Sweep Out The Ashes” and “If Teardrops Were Pennies”. |

Stephen,
I'm not real sure of the year... (And I imagine other Forum-ites know better than I. In fact, I know they do.)
It seems like it was during - or right after - the Jean Shepherd time, maybe. I think Patty may have still been in school. Early '70s??? Dang, 35 years ago...
Us Ol' Guys have too many mixed-up memories to get it all too exact.
I'm sure there are folks here who know far, far more about all those musicians than me. And, if my memories are bad someone will correct me I hope.
Thanks,

I found a little something about Patty and the Wilburns. Teddy and Doyle have a REAL place in country music history, for all the people they helped get started. |

I think it was the mid-seventies when she worked with the Wilburn Brothers. She came to Nashville just out of high school and was also "mentored" by Porter and Dolly among others and went on the road with the Wilburns for a while. She married their drummer, and ended up singing mostly rock and roll and living in North Carolina for several years. Then she made another stab at Nashville in the mid eighties and hooked up with Tony Brown and Emory Gordy...
And started making twenty years worth of great country records! |

Pete, what cuts are you on? This an outstanding traditional album. I just got it today. Tremendous arrangements and musicians. Carmella Ramsey sings the tightest high harmonies I've ever heard. I'm really glad that you and Al are being heard on this. |

Yesterday's Dallas Morning News had a nice review of the CD:
Quote: |
Sleepless Nights
Saguaro Road Records
CLASSIC COUNTRY: Kentucky's Patty Loveless inhabits 14 traditional, memorable country songs on Sleepless Nights, her first studio album in three years. For some, the idea of this vocalist putting her achingly beautiful pipes on tunes from the genre's golden repertoire might almost seem like an afterthought. After all, she's always been an elegant purveyor of the pain so inherently a part of true country music.
CLASSIC PATTY: But let's not dismiss Sleepless Nights as merely obvious. Especially since tracks such as "There Stands the Glass," "Color of the Blues," "Don't Let Me Cross Over" and "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know," to name a few, should never be relegated to yesteryear oblivion. Ms. Loveless lives them, all of them. Today's pop-country divas could take a pointer or two about real interpretive passion from this recording.
BOTTOM LINE: Country music still needs Patty Loveless. She's a necessary reminder of its rich heritage.
