I bought one of the Bill Lawrence 705 copies from Bobbe...It comes with 5 wires....The instructional sheet with it says to conect the green and white wires, and connect the black and bare wires. Then you have a regular 3-wire set-up..I talked to the guys at Bobbe's to see what else can be done ....since there are 5 wires what are the possibilites?..No one at Bobbe's knew. Have any of you guys tried this pickup?. I've never seen an original 705. Did it have 5 wires? Thanks, Larry |

I don't know about this pickup for certain - but a 4-5 wire hookup usually gives you separate taps for each of the two humbucking coils. This makes it possible to split the coils and/or choose between a series or parallel humbucking hookup. You would need to hook up extra switches to use those extra possibilities.
There are lots of articles on the web about this. For example (this is just a couple of many),

This book on guitar electronics was written about 25 years ago, but is just as useful today:

To do anything but a standard series-humbucking hookup, you'll need to know which wire corresponds to which side of each coil. Maybe someone else here knows that - I don't since I've only used the older 705's made by Bill Lawrence in the late 70s or early 80s (chrome surrounds). All the originals I've ever seen were 2-conductor. |

Thanks Dave for the great advice and sites. Years ago, I installed dual humbuckers on a MelodyMaker, and was told to try and wire the phase reversal switch based on sound. It worked. However, if you have a non-potted pick-up, and the magnet pole pieces are oriented the same way (I confess I made this assumption in the late 70's with matched pups), you can take the wiring down far enough to see the winding "sense". Be careful, though, you don't want to lose the end of the wire. Bill Lawrence's pups do look potted, so it's a moot point here. |

All I've figured out is that the Black and green are one coil and the red and white are the other. I know I can hook up an in/out of phase switch......just wondering what else could be done.?....Larry |
