Hello,
I am new to the steel guitar. I have been reading the forum for about a week, and I am fascinated by the breadth and depth of knowledge that forum members have of intruments, history, and music.
I am looking for a book that tells the story of the mechanical developments of the pedal steel and the stories of the men and women who have made the sound what it is today. I know very little on the subject. Despite hours of frustrating online searches that lead to random tidbits, I have found no consolidated resource on the subject. There are many books about lap steel, slatkey, and a few on western swing. Although there are many about country in general, I have yet to find one comprehensive historical resource on psg and psg players. To be honest, I've found more information on the many posts of this page than anywhere else.
Does anyone know of such a book? Could anyone recommend one? It seems to me that the people on this page have first hand knowledge and memories of a beautiful and unique tradition that has never received its proper due. But that just could be my own ignorance. |

Hey join the crowd. I was so frustrated at the lack of info on the history of the Sho Bud Company, that I decided to contact the old employees and get some stuff in writing. That was about 8 or 9 years ago and you can find it at the Unofficial ShoBud website.
I did get several bios of the road players, Johnny Cox, Jack Smith, Big Jim Murphey and a couple others. Actually got to set down with each of them for several hours and taped there bios as they told it to me. I've got those written up.
Anyway, I've always been frustrated at the lack of written or video history of the steel guitar and its famous players. Jerry Byrd and Don Helms did sit down and write books featuring their bios and instrument and that helps. Really wish Buddy Emmons would do that too... |
