McTamney's Pawnbrokers on Church Street have a brown "The Professional" sitting there. One broken Grover peg, neck switch is bent up. I'm no expert, but it looks like some stuff has been changed: narrow pedals, narrow levers, and it's not rack and barrel as I sort of expected.

It won't fit in my suitcase for the flight home, but I thought somebody local might be interested.

I was in Toronto and looked at this guitar last week. It's in rough shape and seems to have been mistreated and neglected for years. In my opinion, getting it back into playable condition would be a major, expensive undertaking. McTamney's is asking $1700 CDN.

Andrew, did you think that was original 'Bud Hardware underneath? I don't disagree with any of your conclusions, but I thought maybe the thing had already had one rebuild, maybe with Marrs parts or something. Definitely did not look Coop.

There were many screw holes in the bottom. My impression was that the guitar had had one rebuild with Sho-Bud parts. Probably long ago, judging by the appearance of the parts.

FWIW, there seems to be an electrical problem. I plugged the guitar into several amps, using several different cords, but got no sound out of it.

I'd check it out but I've already got a Sho-Bud & McTamney's has a few bad memories for me if you know what I mean.
Hey Andy, I didn't know you were playing steel. Small world.

IMHO Kevin is being generous in his appraisal.

Over on Queen St. West at Capsule music you can typically find a brown Maverick for $1,300. Luckily the big Professional body also makes a nice piece of furniture, because it sounds like this store will have it around for a good while yet.

I was at Capsule one time, and they had an MCI D10 for $1,500 and a Maverick right next to it for $1,300. Rolling Eyes Regular guitar dealers see the name "Sho~Bud" and, being the only steel name they recognize, jack the price up idiotically. I guess they eventually get sick of looking at the guitar and blow it out at a discount - which is usually the price it should have been all along. More often than not, it's a bird's nest underneath as well. They seem to believe that steel value is all about the shape of the cabinet alone.

The latest example of this is the D12 on Ebay right now. That was originally listed a few months ago at something crazy, like $3,200 or something. It's now at a starting bid of under $2,000.
