I got to meet & hear Rob today! Although I knew who he was, I never really heard hom play. OMG! HE is an outrageous picker.
BLue Highway has great tunes and Rob is amazing.

Yeah Bo, did you notice the reach on his left hand? Looks like when he spreads his fingers out behind the bar, he is covering from the nut to the 14th fret. A phemonenal player as well as a really nice person. A lot of dobro players use "tricks" to
accomplish really fast sounding licks, but Rob just
gets in there and digs it out. (Plus, he knows all the "tricks", too).

Looks like Bo and I were in the same spot yesterday  . I was stage crew.
Rob's a monster talent and a fine guy to boot. I thought the credit the band gave to the early Seldom Scene (and Mike Auldridge) was a gracious comment.

Aside from incredible technique and mastery of the neck of the dobro, Rob just has great music bursting out through his pores.
His ability to listen to a song and use the emotional capability of a dobro to capture the essence of the song is sublime.
I was really stoked the last time I saw Blue Highway, about two months ago in San Francisco, I called out Homeless Man as a request for a song from their latest album. They obliged, and what was really cool is that Tim Stafford mentioned from the stage that they had yet to play that song live in concert.
They just nailed it. Rob's playing on that song is perfect.
Another of my favorite pieces of Rob's playing is from the album called The Nashville Acoustic Sessions, which features Raul Malo and his somewhat Orbison-like lead vocals. There is hauntingly beautiful version of Gram Parson's "Hot Burrito #1" and Rob's playing almost brought me to tears the first time I listened to it.
A few years ago several of us attended a workshop put on by Rob at his sister's house near San Francisco and it was very worthwhile.
And he is a great guy - a hometown boy from out here that has made good in Nashville!

Howard, I wish I knew you were there... I would have liked a seat in the truck.. definitely an upgrade! 
I was standing next to the stack on Robs' side for both sets.
Mark, they did "Homeless Man" .. gave me and the rest of the audience chicken skin.
there was lot of great music coming from the stage yesterday.. most of it from BLue Highway! . |

There was also a magic impromptu jam in the artists' tent with Rob and Frank Sollivan. It included a great version of Grisman's EMD (Eat My Dust) that had me laughing, it was so good!
Bo, next year sneak around back and ask for me.
