Topic: The ultimate gig? |

I have often thought over the years that Norm Hamlett has had the ultimate gig playing in The Strangers behind Merle. That must be awesome. It would be interesting to get other views on what for some would be the ultimate gig.
Would it be Don Helms with Hank Williams, Tom Brumley in the Buckeroos or even more recently John Hughey and Paul Franklin with the Time Jumpers?

i always thought the best gig would be like conway and john. a great singer who's music was defined by the steel player doing his own thing.

Bobby Flores or Ray Price and that angle of country music for me.
The ultimate gig? Maybe one of the most satisfying? Playing at any local senior citizens center. Want to get paid? Just look up into the smiling faces and look into the eyes of pure appreciation---sometimes you can even feel over-paid.

Mike Daily's gig with George Strait would have to be about as good as it gets !! Mike and I attended Jeff Newmans school together in 1982 - seems he has done rather well for himself since then !!

| I feel very blessed to have (for me) the best steel gig possible in Blueground Undergrass. Outstanding musicians and best friends playing all kinds of music in all kinds of venues, way more solo space than any band I've been in, with each instrument integral to every song, improvisiation making or breaking itself and re-inventing the music at every turn, and getting to jam and sit in with one hero after another at festivals all over the place. Sweet. |

Boy is this a hard question to answer.
It requires that you name your goals, your present position as to pro or hobby, money, playing what you desire to play, traveling....etc.
Considering all things I for one am doing just what I want to do.......I pick with guys I want to pick with, play what I want to play, dont go where I dont want to go and use the pay to HELP pay for my hobby. Now how can you beat that.
Guys that are trying to make a living at playing have a very hard time of even enjoying their job. We all owe them a lot of respect.
Were I good enough that someone offered me a LOT of money to go on the road with them........I would have to say "Thanks but no thanks!"..even if I were younger it would still be the same.
I have only my own requirements to live up to. |
