See this link for converting a PSG to a console and give me your opinion, please.

No responses between 7:51 am and 11:35 am? On a Sunday? During Labor Day weekend??? I'm shocked! Smile Smile

Seriously, I think a Carter Starter would be as fine a non-pedal steel guitar as it is a pedal steel guitar. If you want a ten string steel, that'd be an inexpensive way to go.

Thanks, Brad! I needed (and earned) that comeuppance. My only excuse is my old closed head injury thats made me awful hyper and really obsessive-compulsive! Whoa! And the fact, that I don't have much of life at the present!

Dang, I thought everybody only slept 4 hours and was up at 3:00 AM on Sundays!

Really though, you should consider politics, Brad, that was very well done. I'll bet B.O. could use you! Laughing

Thanks so much for the comments, Brad. That "Starter" would be by far the least expensive solution to a console non-pedal steel as far as I can see. I have my oldest daughter's old, adjustable keyboard stand that should be perfect.

I was looking for an 8, but a 10 would allow a couple of more bass strings. I am a Travis/Atkins picker from way back on 6 and 7 string regular guitar. I plan to pursue a lot of that on both non-pedal (and pedal).

Yer' right, of course, Chuck, about the great builders.

But, all of the non-pedals that I've looked at are just out of my budget. I want at least an 8 string and I much prefer a console. Also, I am really saving for a PSG (my 1st priority) and that precludes any sort of large $$$ outlay at all.

Thanks,

Johnne Lee

Sounds like you should go for it. That's fairly cheap.

It would be cheaper than buying a 10-string non-pedal guitar. However... the string spacing is a lot closer than it is on a 10-string non-pedal guitar, such as the Alkire eHarp or the MSA Superslide. This tighter string spacing makes for difficult bar slants on adjacent strings. But if price is a consideration, and you want to try a 10-string non-pedal steel guitar... I'd say 'go for it'!

Thanks for your time and experience, Doug! I truly appreciate all the knowledge so readily provided by everyone.

Since I'm saving for a PSG (My 1st priority) the tighter spacing would be beneficial. And, I could work on my left hand which is what I really need more than anything! It's been 20 years since I tried to slant or back pull! : -\

Thanks again,

Johnne Lee

I converted a Fender 400 to a lap steel several years ago and while I wish I could do it over again I'm really pleased with it as a lapper. My string spacing is close but hasn't been a problem with slants and it's 24" scale. If you get the Carter you might want to scrap the changer and use a stationary bridge if you have enough room at the end of the neck and run the strings through the body.
