There was no "tone" mod for the 500. As I recall the only thing it has is OP Amp updates. If the old Session 500 (I had one for many years until it got too heavy for me, and consider the best steel amp Peavey ever built) is working well and sounds good to you I wouldn't change anything. Basically "don't fix it if it ain't broke". |

There's the John LeMay mod for the 500 (available from Al B.). I installed it in my 500 and it made a world of difference. I no longer have the amp (5000 lbs! ) but I thought it was a very good product. YMMV |

Peavey did sell a Tone Mod Kit for the Session 500 at one time. I installed one of the kits in my 1984 model Session 500.
The Session 500 Tone Enhancement Kit consisted of changing:
C1 (.1uf) to a 2.2uf/50v cap - Peavey part#70320010
C6 (2.2uf) to a 22uf/25v cap - Peavey part#70320012
C26 & C27(.0068uf)to .0047uf/100v cap-part#70330069
R3 (220K) to a 1 Meg resistor Peavey part#70240039
U2,U6,U7,U20 (4558 to OPA2604) Peavey part#c57000092
U1,U11 (5532 to OPA2604) Peavey part#c57000092
I think you can still order the individual parts from Peavey, or maybe get them from Ken Fox.
Hope this helps,
Cheers!

Pat,
I had the Peavey Mod fitted about 2 years back to my 500 and am very happy with the result. It added an amount of 'body' to the treble ... without making it muddy. I still have the original parts neatly tucked away so that if ever wanted, it can be restored to original specs.

postscipt ... mine was the actual Peavey produced tone mod kit |

I ordered and installed the Peavey 500 mod in mine 4 years ago. It made a big difference. One other thing I also did was replace all of the electrolytic capacitors, especially those in the power supply. It really tightened up the bass. These amps are nearing thirty years old and I can guarantee that the capacitors are drying out. Put in some high quality caps and you will be amazed.
Now, all I need to do is continue my workouts so I can keep carrying it! _________________ 1980 Emmons PP D10, Hilton Pedal, Peavey Session 500 & Nashville 112 |

I do have wheels on it, but in & out of the car and stairs are still a workout. But I do love the tone! _________________ 1980 Emmons PP D10, Hilton Pedal, Peavey Session 500 & Nashville 112 |

No amp straight from the factory will suit everybody. Some just want a little more of "something", so amps (and most everything else, within reason) sometimes get modified. Part of the problem is that products are designed by engineers, and these engineers may not always relate to the needs of a non-engineer.
It took countless engineers to design a car that goes 50,000 miles between tune-ups, and gets over 30 miles per gallon. It only took a few soccer-moms to determine it didn't have enough cup-holders! ![Wink](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) |
