Topic: MONK'S MOOD (Thelonious Monk)---Leavitt Tuning |

A fellow Forum member Scott McLaughlin sent me
some sheet music of the subject song. I learned it
is widely played and sung in Jazz circles.
Thelonious Monk was a Jazz Pianist and composer.
And highly respected at that.
Scott wondered if I could put it on the Leavitt
Tuning and I have been working on it today.
When and if you can get into this it is very
relaxing and captivating. I still have to add a
bridge to this but here is how it sounds so far.
My Leavitt set up is the original six string.
Amazing how Bill Leavitt came up with this.

Thanks fellas!
I would never have worked this song if Scott
had not asked me to try it on the Leavitt.
It would be nice to have a Jazz musician here
to help me... 
I am working on the Bridge now and will try to put
some guitar chords behind the arrangement at some
point in the future. It is an ongoing project.

| Roy...fantastic to hear more Monk played on steel! I play this tune on piano sometimes although am not an adept enough steel player to attempt this one yet. On piano I try to take liberties not only with the (already) quirky harmony but the time too. Check out a wonderful medley on Susan Alcorn's "Uma" recording where she combines two Monk tunes ("A Crepuscule for Nellie" and "Panonica") with a playful Dizzy Gillespie tune, "Groovin' High". Her timing is 'rubato' for part of the Monk tunes which feels really appropriate....throughout the medley she goes in and out of time which is delightful. Also check out one Monk's solo recordings of this tune to get the vibe. I can send you a few of my favourites if you like....I have a few versions Riverside, including one with John Coltrane "Thelonius Himself" 1957 and other great versions by Bud Powell and Chick Corea. They are all as different as can be - I think that is the point...the quirkier the better! |

Hey Roy....I will get some MP3s off to you later. We are just battening down the hatches for Hurricane Gustav....it should be on top of us tomorrow evening. Although it is currently predicted to go right through Grand Cayman but it will not be another Hurricane Ivan  which was Category 4/5 with a big storm surge. Wish us luck!!  |

there's a Monk discussion over in the Music section right now, which led me to this older topic.
I contacted Roy to hear his take on "Monk's Mood" but he no longer has the file.
