I don't know the intricate ins and outs of resonator guitars, so school me here!
There is a Maple Tut Taylor Reso by Crafters of Tennessee for sale locally for $995, in very good shape. Is this a good price?
I want to pick up a spider-cone square neck at some point and want a good guitar, but I'm more interested in sound than looks. The Tut Taylor is a beautiful guitar, curly maple, but if its price is more a reflection of it's pretty wood more than it's perfect sound, I'll go to something that is less visually stunning and sounds just as good for the money.
Help me out here!

Street prices for new ones start at around 1750 $. I`ve seen used ones from 1200 to 1500 $.

How does it compete volume-wise with, say, a banjo or fiddle?

I have played a Tut Taylor "Virginian" for sevral years and I would not part with it. Great fit and finish and great tone. Good volume and very well made!

I haven't played with a fiddle player but, we do use a banjo on a few songs. He uses a pick up, I play through a mic; no problem.

Well, surprise, surprise, I bought it. It was at guitar center and they had ordered it for someone who declined to purchase, so it was actually new. With case it ran me $999.99! It's a pretty stunning looking guitar (photos coming later), so now I need to go out and find a band to play it in 
I stopped in at another store in town on my way back, Portland Music Acoustic, and they had a square neck tri-cone Recording King and a biscuit round neck as well as a Regal Black Lightning square neck. All 3 were excellent sounding and playing guitars. Nicely priced at $479 for the Recording Kings to about $679 for the Regal. I tell ya, if I hadn't just bought the TT I'd have walked out with at least the Regal and maybe the tricone as well! Ah well, later down the road.
I have been seriously bitten by the resonator bug

Wow, that's a great deal!
I have a TT Virginian and love it. Sounds great, no rattles and the wood and finish is really beautiful.
I might get others but this one is a keeper.

You will get your money back and maybe more if you decide to sell it.
I got $1300 for my used TT Tennesean 2 years ago.
