Will be starting lessons in Tucson, AZ soon. Looking for SD10-DB for sale vs. buying a new Carter. I'm on the fence about buying used vs. new. Anyone have a nice used one for sale, contact me please. Thank you!

Jan,Give Chuck Back http://www.desertroseguitars.com/ a call at Desert Rose...Sometimes he gets trade inns.I think that you can get a great used guitar for between a grand,and fifteen hundred if you keep watching the buy&sell adds.You should also check into a used GFI.Stu

I've put a call into Desert Rose and with some great advice am contacting a few others. I'm thinking at this point that the S10 (w/o double body) might be the way for me to start. I'm looking at Emmons, BMI, and GFI.
Thanks to all my new steel friends. Special thanks to Josh, Eddie, and Steve. I'm still looking and still taking advice.

Go with the double or 1 and 1/2 so you don't have to hold you arms up every second you play which gets very tiring. |

Has anyone tried out Don Bloods custom arm rests for S10s? Made same length as PSG in widths of 3, 4, 5 inches in different colors for $85. Looks like they attach to the legs. Any feedback on this?

| Unless you're extremely strong, you may want to onsider A Williams or GFI S10, they both come in at around 27 lbs out of the case.. Though the older S10 MSA & Sho Bud are excellent guitars for playability, tone, & manufactured real well, they do tend to be a bit on the heavy side, but if you're only going to be a bedroom player, then they will sure fit the bill, & there are quite a few available at reasonable prices... The Forum people here will treat you right. |

Don builds a real quality arm rest. He built one for my S-10 and it fit perfectly. I can highly recommend his product. The price is right, too.

I've been looking at the Forum BMI for sale. It is definitely a quality instrument! I believe it has a Day pedal set up and three knee levers that are in a customized set up. I'm looking to see if the pedal setup can be changed to Emmons and the knee levers changed. I think it's an all pull tuning. I've seen a really nice GFI S10 with Emmons and 4 standard KL for around $1,000 unused. I'm keeping my options open as everyone has advised and not rushing in. I don't want to wait too long, because I am anxious to begin my lessons and at home practice! So, please pass on anything you believe helpful. I appreciate advice and encouragement, truly. Thank you all so very much

Looking at the posted photos of the BMI, it looks like the 4 and 8 string raise and lower are on the left knee. If it has the Day setup, converting to the Emmons is just a matter of switching the pull rods from one lever to the other. You could try it the way it is, you may actually prefer the Day setup. Your teacher could probably help with this if you think it's necessary.
If the GFI is the student model, it would probably be fine, but many would prefer the BMI over the GFI student model. It is a more substantial guitar than the GFI student model. All, my opinion, of course. But I have owned two BMI S-10, I have one now, and I really like them.

Hi Jan
Don't get too 'hooked' on the arm-rest thing. (A misnomer if there was one!  ) Because of the double body, the 'rest' is mainly fitted as a cosmetic; making the steel more pleasing to look at.
'Resting' one's arm/s during playing is only done after you've been at it for some time, and has mastered the correct stance for your arms during playing. My 2-cents worth!

Well, my search is finally over! I made a deal with a friend of my teacher's yesterday (Sunday, 8/17). I will soon have a Fessenden SD10 (small pad), 3/5 Emmons Setup!
I am so excited now that I can soon get down to some serious practice and hair pulling!!!
I can't thank everyone properly for the incredible advice you all put out there publicly and privately. I feel I have made some extremely valuable friends in the PSG community and won't let you down. I'll do my best so that some day (probably several months from now!) I can say that I'm a PSG Player and sit beside you (or at least right behind you) (Big Grin!)
I understand there is a gathering in Phoenix in January and I plan on attending. I hope to see you all, so please look me up and keep in contact.
