I recently had the pleasure of reading front to back the new publication written by Carl Dixon entitled, “The Evolution Of Steel Guitar”. I found his book to be comprehensive, informative, enlightening, and entertaining, and I congratulate Carl for his research and attention to detail, in addition to his well placed sprinkle of humor.
Carl makes it perfectly clear from the first page and throughout, that divine inspiration lead him to write his book. His commitment to his belief’s, the steel guitar, and steel guitar enthusiasts the world over, will be clearly evidenced by all who read “The Evolution Of Steel Guitar”.
I understand Carl will be at the ISGC in St. Louis the end of this month and he will have books available. Should anyone wish to ask Carl questions about the book or place an order, you may do so at patdeeee@yahoo.com I recommend this book as a must have for all steel guitar players and enthusiasts. |

Thank you Reece.
'preciate that! And thanks for the kind words.
10 yrs ago, a lady by the name of Lorene Ruymar in Victoria, BC; wrote a book titled, "The Hawaiian Steel Guitar", which was "foreworded" by Jerry Byrd.
She did an exemplary job of compiling some awesome "histories" and photos concerning what has become our beloved instrument. It is now sold worldwide, and I believe it is available on Amazon.
About 5 yrs ago, I got an email from a gentleman in Europe (I cannot for the life of me remember his name), who wanted to know if I would be interested in writing a book on the "Pedal Steel Guitar" that would take it from where Lorene's book left off.
I later declined respectfully. However, as the days and years went by, I continued to receive requests to write a book on the pedal steel guitar. In all cases I declined. I neither felt qualified nor inspired to do it. So I did not feel it would be my direction.
This past May 18th, I was sitting at my computer, doing nothing (as usual) and a little voice inside me, said, "write the book". I have never had anything like that in my 76 yrs on this earth.
Somehow, without ANY direction or real research, etc, etc, I started writing. The words flowed like water out of a boot. Pictures I had long since forgotten I had, sparked my brain's memory.
2 weeks later, I finished the book. It was the most unusual experience of my life. I neither intended to write a book, nor did I ever in my wildest dreams believe I would. But it was finished, except for:
1. Spelling errors by the kadzillions!
2. Grammar errors by almost kadzillions!
and,
3. "Permissions to use photos".
I neither knew HOW to get it copyrighted, published or bound. Today I could write a thesis on that aspect. In a word, it just all came together with little, if any input from me.
I decided to send out 12 "draft" copies, to thoes I felt would be the most beneficial toward the theme and purpose of the book. I foreworded it, saying in essence, do NOT sugar coat it. Say what you feel.
9, to date, have responded. Because of the delays in getting those 9, I went ahead and had 100 copies printed.
I will incorporate MOST of the suggestions given, in the next issue, IF there is a second issue.
St. Louis will be a "test" as to whether it is to be. I am satisfied either way.
The list price is $29.95 plus the $3.95 for the bubble mailer and postage. However, in St. Louis, I am discounting it by $5.00 and of couse, no shipping costs. So $24.95 takes it home.
For those who are not coming to St. Louis, I will honor the discounted price, if a check is mailed, postmarked by midnight, August 31st. The shipping will apply in this case. ($28.90).
Note: the shipping price is good only for those living in the contiguous united states. Outside these adjoining states, it will be only what the additional cost is for mailing.
If you are going to St. Louis, and you wish to get a copy, do come by the Excel room and I will have one for you. And if you do not want a book, come by anyway and visit. I would like that.
Per chance I run out, I will ship it to you at MY expense. That is only fair. I can have another 100 copies made in 2 days. So no problem here. ($24.95) is what you pay, and I will ship it free in this case.
Thanks again to Maurice for announcing this book today.
May Jesus bless you all, and I look forward to seeing many old friends and new ones too in St. Louis.

I am real proud of you and happy for you.
I am sure it is a great book and will help further our instrument.
Hopefully you will soon also be able to sell an e-book version.

Thank you J D.
An "E" version is a very real possibility. Not sure when just yet.

I'll always cherish my copy; I am so grateful that Carl wrote this book and if he writes another, I want to be first in line. There are lots of beautiful pictures of psg along with the history that Carl shares. I also use it as a repository for some of Carl's posts from the forum. Thank you Carl Dixon; IMO if there were more like you the world would be a much better place. |

Thanks Carl for sending me one of those first copies. My response now and then was print and get it out. This book will become a classic seller for all old and brand new players. I learned more in one reading about steels and tuning than I ever had before. It is truly inspired in more ways than one. Better print a bunch more Carl. Thanks my brother and friend.
Blessings and enjoy that New Excel.

My sincere thanks for the above comments. And to all the rest who have ordered the book.
May you enjoy it always. And may Jesus richly bless all of you. And this also includes those who are not interested in the book.
Again, please come by the Excel room if you are in St. Louis. If we have not met, it would be an honor to "meet your aquaintance".
Bill Stafford (Mr Smooth) will be there. Bill is one of the nicest persons I have EVER met. And his new CD is awesomely listenable. It would surely bode well in ANY dinner or club 'background' music scenario. His rendition of "Sweet Memories", is truly a 'cut above', as are all on this fine CD. Bill is the reason I bought my first Excel. Thanks Bill.

Carl has sent me his book and I will agree with all the Forum Members that it is a great book for Steel Guitarists. There is a lot of info and history in this book. Brings back memories of when Jerry Byrd and I started back in 1936, I was in Cleveland and he was in Lima, ohio, but we never met. My loss.
Thanks Carl for presenting this book for us..al.![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) _________________ Michigan (MSGC)Christmas Dinner and Jam on my 80th Birthday.
