On a tip from a trusted friend, I bought a Republic Tri-cone on ebay recently, and I've been very impressed with the tone and build quality of my new instrument. Tonally, it's very close to the newer National tri-cones, and it's hard to argue with the $650 price tag. Worth checking out..

I bought a squareneck back in March, and I think it's a pretty decent instrument for the money. No,it's not a $3K National, but it's giggable and does have a pretty good tone, especially when you put good strings on it.
That said, I DO plan to buy a National at some point in the future. _________________ Todd James Weger --

I have one, too. Everybody loves the sound. I am saving for a National. But who knows? I may decide otherwise when all is said and done. $3000.00 can buy an awful lot of other stuff....not to mention that it looks good in one's bank account. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

I bought a Republic squareneck tricone about a year ago and have been very happy with it. Since I put National cones in it about 3 months ago, I have been even happier with the sound. The Continental cones that came stock were good, but the NRP hot rods are deeper, have better sustain and are louder.
I have played this guitar in side by side with both a Johnson tricone and a recent National tricone; the Johnson was weaker, while the Republic and National were very comparable (though not in price!)
Negatives? While I had the cones out and could look around inside the body, I could see that he guitar is not top notch craftsmanship; there were metal burrs, plywood shims and protruding screwheads. That said, see the first paragraph regarding sound quality.
My bottom line? For acoustic lap steel old school Hawaiian playing, it is great if you don't have the cash for a National.
Cheers,
Hugh |

I bought one about two years ago and am very happy with it. The workmanship is first class and it sounds just like a National. But the price must have gone up, because I didn't spend anything like $600 on it. |
