What is the most hum and hiss free quality units being used? I have tried all the Tubefex, transtubefex, profex 1,and 2.They are noisey and draw alot of frowns from the sound man and nearby pickers.I have tried many ways to reduce there noise but you only end up with less volume. They would sound great if they diddn't carry on in the background. It looks like the little Boss dd3 is the only one thats stage friendly.

For a rack mounted processor, the T.C. Electronic G-Major was the best one I found. It is not noisy like the Peavey units, but then it is not both a preamp and effects processor, it's only a (line level) effects processor.

The "line level" brings up another point, if you try to use a "line level" device in a low level (instrument level) line it will be noisy (have a poor Signal to Noise Ratio) as it is set up to have "line level" input to the unit. The Lexicon rack units are all "line level" units.

Another unit that is quiet is the POD XT. I have one and mainly use it for effects only and there is NO noise at all. I've also used it as a preamp/effects unit to drive a power amp and directly to a recording board and it too was quiet.

regular amp.It has its own preamp. Also can you put the steel presets in them?

Bob, yes that is a "line level" unit, like all the rack mounted Lexicon models.
