I have dozens of instruments, lots of guitars, acoustic and electric, 4 Lap steels, 2 resonators, a pedal steel, bass, banjo, 2 mandolins, 3 ukes, and lots more that I have loaned out or in some stage of repair. And yet I can’t resist checking out every music store, Ebay, Craigslist and other online sites like MusiciansFriend etc! I won’t even begin to list amps and effects…
So here is the question:
DO I REALLY NEED ANOTHER INSTRUMENT? Also: DO I EVEN NEED ALL THE ONES I OWN NOW?
I just started thinking, and honestly whenever I gig I usually play my old trusty Silvertone (Valco) six string lap steel, or my favorite Metal bodied resonator for acoustic stuff. I rarely play my Pedal steel for live performances, but use it often for studio work.
So the bottom line is: I could simplify my live and limit myself to one lap steel, one resonator and one pedal steel!

I recently sold 4 guitars but have since then bought two more. It's a most enjoyable hobby to collect and own something that brings so much pleasure. |

I had another one of the notorious outdoor gigs tonight, which I played with an instrument that I dearly love, but don't care much for the thought of playing outside during a hurricane, so....
Yeah, another one would be good. I bought one last year that I didn't care for, and now it's on semi-permanent loan to a student. So, at the risk of offending someone's girlfriend, I need another.

I have 3. One for the living room for woodshedding, one in the music room/studio in the basement, and one in the garage at the bottom of the hill to take when I play out. (I live on an incline and have to deal with stairs to get from my house to the street.) I don't need a 4th.
I just want one 'cause I'm a steel-aholic. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Where do you guys get the dough to buy all these steel guitars--selling drugs?--robbing banks? It aint from local gigs, that's for sure!
I have one Derby SD-10, one rusty ol' Fender student model that's not even mine (I borrowed it 15 years ago from a guy--he moved away--never heard from him again, One Nashville 112 amp, one old Hohner 1040 amp, and almost a quarter of a tank of gas. Oh, but I have two good volume pedals and an extra set of picks! |

I have this great old SHobud professional set up at home for practicing and home studio recording.
And I have a new GFI Expo that I use for live work.
Aside from that, I am so fortunate that the drummer in the band I`m playing in also play a little pedal steel, so a Zumsteel stage one is always set up in the rehersal room.
So, I have what I need .......for now.. |

I would like to have a nice SD-10 4 and 5 to use when I don't feel like carrying the D-10 around. My back would thank me but my wife would not be a happy camper.
I tried remind her that she had more than one pair of shoes. Now just tell me, "what is the difference?"
I also promised her that it would be the last one. All I got was "THAT" look. _________________ Mullen (Black) Pre G-2 9x7, B.L. 705 PUP's, Evans SE 200 Telonics NEO 15-4, BJS Bar, Peterson Strobo Flip, Steelers Choice Seat, Folgers Coffee and Hilton Pedals.

Since my auto Accident last week i have made up my mind to eliminate some of mine. Before the accident my Back was already getting weak. I have toted and carted and drug amps, guitars and everything else for years. Now it is time to down size. I have three Steels All Excel Superbs A 2002 blue keyless excel Sd12 5x7 I keep at the Church which i play sunday am & pm.
My second guitar is a 2005 Caramel and Ivory color Excel superb Keyless Single 12 with 1/2 pad 7x9 with joe wright setup which im going to sell on Ebay this week.
My third Steel is an 2006 Excel Superb in Patriotic colors Red White and Blue, a Beautiful guitar. It is a SD12 7x9 Keyless with the Joe wright set up.
I have a 1964 Chet Atkins tennesean gretsch 6 string guitar my favorite which i have owned for 38 years. A 1978 Ibenez St300 my studio guitar with a nine way tone selector jumbo frets an awesome sounding & playing guitar. A 2007 SRV {Stevie Ray Vaughn} Gold Trim, Sunburst with Rosewood fretboard Stratocaster which is going to ebay this week. And Several more guitars, dobros, amps etc.
Lord willing i will still be playing my Church, Nursing homes and Regular weekend shows.
The Show or Venue i play usually decides the instrument and amp i will use. That is my reason for mulitiple and different Instruments.
Oh! By the way Brother Allen I get that "LOOK" too

I feel myself as a player, not a collector. As I can't play many guitars at same time, one is enough for me, but it should be good one. Of course, I have one of each - Alhambra W3 Dreadnought (from Spain), Vantage VSH-445 Hollowbody electric (Japanese made, from 1982), Fender Champ lap steel (1962) and finally GFI SD-10 Ultra, I just beginning to learn. As slide player for last 3 decades, I should find a really good sounding resophonic, probably roundneck, and then I'll be happy as a man can be! |

You don't like the Pedabro?
I currently have one guitar. It's a tricone. I get tempted to buy and electric now and then just for the difference in tone possibilities. But I don't really need it. So far, I am resisting the urge. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

Well, aside from the fact that they are unavailable and I couldn't get one even if I wanted one, the answer is no, I don't. They have no volume whatsoever, and despite sounding sort of like an acoustic dobro, they cannot function without amplification.
Moreover, they only came with 10 strings, and I play a U-12. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Boy, Alan, you got that right. Have you priced good women's shoes lately. And how about the thirty + purses? I have one wallet!! When it wears out, I buy a new one. (Sorry to go off topic, but I couldn't resist.) |

According to my wife the house is full of instruments and I should start selling them.
The answer to the question is therefore obvious.
Of course I needs lots more instruments. |

I have found over the last 54 years of being married to the same Great Lady, there are several words that cause me to get "THAT LOOK". Here are a few:
Harley Davidson (New Or Used)
New Trap Gun
New Skeet Gun
New 6 string (Taylor or Martin)
New Glock 40
New or Used Pedal Steel (Any) I just need one
New or Used Amplifier (Any)
There are others but they are not as important at 72 as they once were.
Bet Lee Baucum's Wife never gives him "THAT LOOK" _________________ Mullen (Black) Pre G-2 9x7, B.L. 705 PUP's, Evans SE 200 Telonics NEO 15-4, BJS Bar, Peterson Strobo Flip, Steelers Choice Seat, Folgers Coffee and Hilton Pedals.
