Still on vacation until August 22. Having fun and doing some amp and guitar hunting.
Just got this amp. All original electronics and speaker looks original and untouched. However, it is not a Jensen. It has a place for the screw for a bell cover on it. Not sure what this is!! The Fender amp Field Guide says Jensen speakers for Tweed Harvards. I think it might be an Oxford?? No speaker codes on it.
Date codes on transformers are 606010 and 60109. That would make it an early 1961 smp.

The frame stamping does look like a lot of early-mid 60s Oxfords I've had. It's the size and shape of the various cutouts that makes me think this.
Great amps, what Steve Cropper says he used on a lot of the early Stax recordings. I wish I hadn't sold so many of my old tweed amps when I went into a fit of blackface-mania. |

Just a reminder, I got more emails today asking tech questions. I am on vacation until Aug 22nd. My email is not working,I can't send from the laptop. As part of my vacation I am taking time away from the shop and all techy stuff for a while!
Looks like Oxford to me as well, found this ino on the net:
I've heard many great sounding Fender amps with Oxfords. I will admit that I prefer Jensens, but I've never let an Oxford speaker sway my decision from owning a Fender amp. Additionally, the Oxfords from early '60s generally sound very good. According to noted vintage amp specialist Gregg Hopkins, these early Oxfords were constructed similarly to Jensens from that period with respect to materials and voice coil gap. That could explain why they sound good.
jensen: Jensen was the prevalent stock speaker in Fender amps from 1946 through about 1961. As the story goes, Leo Fender wanted Jensen to make some changes to speakers and either the speaker couldn't (price constraints?) or wouldn't do so. That's when ol' Leo switched over to Oxford as the standard speaker (though Jensens were still used from time to time). Just conjecture, but the lack of orders from Fender from 1962 - 65 must have hurt Jensen's pocketbook so they hit up the new owners of Fender (CBS) for some business. These Jensens wear brown and gold Fender by Jensen label and were put into Fender amps beginning in late 1965 through about mid-1967. Some amp geeks don't like the way these Fender label Jensens sound, but let your ears be your guide. |

Not sure how it sounds yet. Just bought it and shipped it and a Masco MU-5 amp back to Georgia. The amp has sat for years so I will bring it up slowly on a variac through a series 60 watt bulb on the workbench when we get back.
Hopefully the speaker still works! If not I will have South Florida re-cone it. |
