I'm going to be in Boston for a couple of days and would like to catch some live music. If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate them.
Thanks,

By all means check out Tele-meister Duke Levine http://www.dukelevine.com/ with lap steel player Kevin Barry and the rippin' R&B band "The Giant Kings" at the Lizard Lounge on Wednesday August 20. The Lizard Lounge is at 1667 Mass. Ave in Cambridge, just north of Harvard Square. It's easily walkable from the Harvard Square Red Line station if you're not driving. http://www.lizardloungeclub.com/main.html
I see from Duke's website that he's playing with Nashville-based alt-folk-rock singer/songwriter Sarah Siskind http://www.sarahsiskind.com/ at Club Passim, right in Harvard Square on Sunday August 17.
I'm originally from Boston, and was there for a week last month. There's lots of jazz, blues, rock, folk, and classical of various types, but I found very little rootsy music and no country or pedal steel guitar in the city, and I looked. I put up this thread on this while I was there - http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=137823 If you're into alt-country or roots-rock, there are a few places in Allston-Brighton that mix that in, but not much shakin' while I was there. These include the Castle Bar, Harper's Ferry, and The Paradise Rock Club. Schedules vary a lot, just google them to see what's happening.
If you're into jazz or blues, I'd suggest Wally's Cafe http://www.wallyscafe.com/ at 427 Mass Ave in Boston, not far from Berklee. Something happening there pretty much all the time. |

Dave, is the club "Toad" still there, near Porter Square in Cambridge? I've seen some good music there over the years, including Duke Levine.
So Sarah Siskind has moved to Nashville? I met her here a while back but got the impression she was Boston based... |

Yup, Toad is there, http://toadcambridge.com/home.asp Looks like a cool place, obviously way after my years in Boston. Didn't come up in the earlier thread, and more remarkably, didn't come up in my searches for places while I was there.
I didn't see a centralized source for info on music in Boston. I looked at the usual rags, seemed pretty disconnected to me - maybe there's some source I missed. I think you sorta' have to know what bands and places to look for to find stuff if you don't live there.
According to Sarah's myspace site, she is now based in Nashville - http://www.myspace.com/sarahsiskind - acording to her bio, she's originally from North Carolina. |
