There was a couple of nice shots of an Emmons S-10 in a TV show on CBS last night (Sunday). I have no idea the plot or show name, but the steel at least got some face (and sound) time.
Anybody know the scoop or the steeler? |

I saw one on COLD CASE. I was flipping through the channels and landed there for a while after I noticed the steel. Good stuff.
Also nice that a camera-man actually knew which instrument to zoom in on?

Yeah, I saw the Cold Case episode. Someone murdered the lead singer [Truck Sugar] of the Sugar Boys band.
Turns out the steel guitarist, Dusty Ray, was a drug addict and shot Truck with a gun he was planning to pawn while jonesing for a fix.
They argued about Truck's decision to turn down a promoter's offer to sponsor the band if they'd drop the drummer, the steel guitar and the fiddle and go more pop. Sound familiar?
I couldn't figure why Dusty was arguing for the deal since he played the instrument the promoters wanted to dump. I guess he was just tore up from craving his drugs.
'Course the story involved a conniving girl singer [Edie somethin'] and Truck's wife [Honey Sugar] and their problems too.
Not a bad show...some nice new country music and dialogue about some actual song titles.
The steel was a lacquer finished Emmons S10. |

| It wasn't that the agent didn't want a drummer, just not the brother of the lead singer. He had been the originator of and the band leader and I guess they didn't like the direction they were going, just wasn't good enough and was holding him back. It's kinda difficult to do a synopsis of the show without wasting space here. I guess you had to see the show to get the gist of the story. |

Michael Levine, the man who writes the music for the show is a big pedal steel guitar enthusiast.
Just before he got the Cold Case gig, he and I talked about collaborating on a concerto for pedal steel guitar and orchestra. But then he got busy writing for the show, and we lost touch with each other and of course never followed up on the idea.

Yeah, I know what you mean Barry. It's seldom I watch an entire episode of any series. The subject of this one caught my attention and the country music and steel guitar thing kept my interest.
I had just caught the tail end of this episode when it aired months ago, so was interested in watching the whole thing as I really couldn't remember anything much about what little bit I saw.
Interesting info about Mr. Levine, Mike.  I guess that is the reason the steel guitar/guitarist was featured in this one. |
