I am buying a new Webb amp from Tom Bradshaw. I will need to get a step down transformer to convert our 240 volts into 110V. There are a number of devices available, and in different wattage. I am looking to get a unit that is rated at 1500 watts. Would this be adequate for a medium power amp like the Webb? _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. Ken, the last Webb Amplifier I had used a 6 Amp. fuse in the 120 volt line....for a potential draw of 720 Watts under full load. I'd say your 1500 watt step-down transformer will be adequate. I'm sure you will love your sound through a Webb Amp. Keep us posted. |

Ken
Ask Tom about using stepdown transformers.
I've seen amp builders that won't export
their amps because they say due to
the 50hz, they will overheat.

I'd say 1500 watts is really overkill. Something around 1000 watts should be more than adequate (because maximum power is used only when the amp is running wide open with the volume pedal all the way down - a situation rarely encountered).
Except for some solid-state amps with digital power supplies, most 60-cycle S/S amps (and all tube amps) do just fine on 50-cycle current. |

i'm w; Donny on this one
1000 watts is sufficient
the 50/60 cycle thing is'nt really pertinent since there is'nt a motor involved
i've been been runnin' a PV Nash 1000 w; a stepdown tranny for at least 5 years without ANY probs |

Peavey wouldn't export the 1000 and 2000 amps because of issues around converting the digital power supplies to 220/240 volts. Hence why CB and and quite a few others imported them through the back door and used step down transformers.
Thanks for the advice all - looks like I can save a little money and get a 1000 watt step down.
The only other decision that I have to make is which colour Webb to get, as Tom says I have a choice. _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. I am using a Peavey Nashville 1000 amp with a step down converter from Voltcraft 400 VA since a few years and never had any problems with it. |

Ken I use a step down transformer for my NV1000 -- I will check it out when I get home tonight and let you know what the rating is. |

Ken, why dont you have Tom use a power transformer with different voltage taps, and be done with it?.
I would check the price of a quality tranny versus the step down.

Hi Ken, sorry for the delay in getting back to you - it would seem that the label on my transformer has worn off so I can't read the rating on it !! I guess you need to make sure that the one you get can handle the power of the amp, other than that you should be right! |

I asked Tom whether he was going to have a variable transformer when he first bought the Webb company. Unfortunately the answer was no, but it would make life easier plus it would open up his products to the European market. Where in Soton were you from? I'm in Bitterne. _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. Ken, I was born in Shirley and lived there the longest, but I think my dad was a gypsy because we kept moving around,Hedge End,Bitterne park,Sholing, Woolston and out in Romsey which was a great place to be 10 years old we had a great time.
Hey I just had a thought, a guy like Mick Williams or Mike Travis could probably upgrade that power tranny.
Did you ever here the Travis/Williams Bassmans?.
All the best

Mike Travis would have been the ideal man for the job, but he is long retired. Mick and Bob Williams are still doing a bit of playing here and there, but Mick doesn't do guitar repairs any more. Mick and Mike sold the M&M shop they had in St Mary Street quite a few years back, and did quite well out of the deal. _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator.
