Hey everyone,

Does anyone have any experience with the newest version of Band in a Box? I have an older version (not sure which) and have been thinking about upgrading, but I am not sure. Thought I'd get a little feedback first. Do the later versions offer any features the older versions did not?

I buy every upgrade as soon as it comes out. There are always a few little improvements, well worth the money.

I have the latest as well. One feature I used today, tho I think it was added a couple versions ago, is to check a song for the chords. I had a stumper, not country, but a melodic minor on MP3. I brought it into BIAB and boom, it printed out the chords for me. Amazing.

Hey Guys,

Papa Joe: I clicked the link and listened to a few tracks... Sounds good, but sounds a little like the backup is infringing on the lead maybe a little? I am talking about the steel parts that are in there. They sound good, but they might get in my way maybe? Can you tweak the instruments individually?

Joe,what you're hearing IS back up NOT lead.Yes it can be tweaked to some degree.Once you get it installed you can adjust or mute each insturment volume..You will have to get it and tinker around with it till you figure things out.But trust me, it will be fun and useful..Be sure too go whole hog and get the mega pac with ALL the real styles..One thing that I realy like is the dobro styles.Good luck...PJ...

Hey Joe -

To add a smidgen to what Papa Joe posted above -

The steel part is contained within the "Soloist" function. If you right-click on "Soloist" you will mute the steel, leaving only the ensemble for your evaluation. Alternatively, as Papa Joe suggested, if you click the radio button to the left of "Soloist" you can then reduce the velocity (volume) of that part.

If you think that BIAB will serve you well, then get the whole enchilada. Just expands your possibilities.

Respectfully,

Richard

Another addition to Papa Joe's suggestion about the videos for BIAB.

Go here:

http://64.40.109.185/pgmusic/wmv/2008_5_RT2-9_video_HQ.wmv

Be patient. There may be things about which you're not interested but it gives you an idea of where PG Music is headed. Interesting.

Respectfully,

Richard

Thanks fellas.

Richard, thats a good link. I can see that BIAB has come a long way since the version I have, 2004. I think I can upgrade to 2008.5 for $100+ or so. I can see the newer version is pretty fully-featured and sounds much better.

Does it come with recording software to burn CDs?

Joe -

In the toolbar at the top, there is an "Audio" function. Under that there is the capability of "burning" your composition to a CD. Can also use the ".WAV" button to access the burner.

Respectfully,

Richard

Alright, guys. After several of hours installing and reinstalling and about 5 calls to tech support, I finally have BIAB 2008 installed. Smile

I gotta say, it is pretty cool. The instruments all sound much more real, especially the "RealTracks".

I also gotta say that PGMusic has the BEST Tech Support I have ever dealt with and as a professional tech guy myself, I have dealt with a lot of tech support people, and they all pale horribly in comparison to PGMusic's support.

When you call, the phone might ring 3 times max, but they might also answer on the first ring. You get an actual person who can answer your questions. No telephone menus, no preliminary screening, just directly to the tech person.

What a pleasure. Dell and Microsoft, etc., could learn a lot about customer support from PGMusic.

Anyway, thanks for the tip, fellas. It was a good upgrade for me.

Darn it Joe,I didn't stop to think that you would be buying this quick..I should have advised you to skip the download and order the program on DVD.Have to wait a couple of days, but the instalation is a lot quicker and easier..It's a good idea to order it any way.5 bucks and you'll have a good back-up if the HD crashes..
Any other readers that are thinking of getting BIAB,get the DVD..Assuming you have a DVD player,of course..PJ..

Papa Joe,
I figured I was techy enough to heandle it, so I bypassed the DVD. I've got all the setup files archived on CD now, so I have a backup incase the HD goes out. So its all good. Besides, if the install had been easy I wouldn't have discovered their outstanding tech support.

Another warning too with BIAB: Not sure it works well with Vista. I couldn't get it installed on my laptop with Vista. Called tech support and they couldn't figure out the problem either. They sort of indicated the BIAB has never been configured to run with Vista - not that it won't, but there can be issues with BIAB and Vista.

I love BIAB 2008.5. I have owned BIAB software since the first edition came out, and their upgrade progress has been phenomenal. When I decide which generated track I like, I download separate WAV files for each track (go to the WAV button and check the tiny box for "separate tracks" I also use the dxi synth sounds, which is bundled with the program (the dxi sounds better than my Soundblaster external card). I then end up with 5 separate tracks which I import into Magix Deluxe 12 Studio. When the tracks are in Magix I can then mix/adjust individual tracks and do the final mix/mastering.
I also go back to BIAB (same song)and use another style which may generate different notes/lead and do the same process as the initial tracks. After I import into Magix I may have 10, 15, 20 WAV tracks with different generated notes/riffs, etc. of the same song. You can then mute/or delete the tracks you don't want and end up with a full band sound. During mix-down there might be a riff or turnaround you want to keep in the mix you can then leave it in for your final master track.
Also since the PSG follows the midi "string" track, I tweak/edit/ the midi "string" track to my liking, import it into BIAB, click "real tracks" and the PSG plays what I edited (string midi track). I normally keep the BIAB PSG in the back ground while I re-record my own part on my steel. It gives the effect of doubling your steel track.

Hope this doesn't confuse you, but there is a ton of fun stuff you can do with this version.

I agree with Joe that the support section of BIAB is excellent, but I took it one step further and contacted Peter Gammon the lead programmer of the software, who explained some of the tricks/tips of the program and offered me the opportunity to participate in a beta/test program for future upgrades.

Have fun!

Rats! Still, maybe I could talk you into showing me around BIAB on the PC, I can bring my MacBook laptop and see how much different they really are; I keep hearing the Mac version lacks stuff, no one really says what, though!

I'm in San Pedro, we're neighbors!

Mr. CAB, indeed! It may be a while before I can try to book a seminar with you, Johnny, have to find a new place to live and do the move in the next 6 weeks. Soon thereafter, I hope, if you're willing.
