One of my students is having difficulty using the tone bar. Are there any courses out there that I could recommend? As an early player I struggled with the use of the bar, but it seem like years ago one day it just happened that I found the technique. Thank you!! _________________ LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN GEORGIA |

TB,
One of the best things for bar technique is to play a little no pedals or something where you have to travel up and down the neck to get your notes. This will help the student get use to the bar with movement and then when they are working over a 2 fret area it will seem like a cakewalk. Also playing against a pedal tone (droning chord or a root note) helps greatly with bar placement and intonation.

Many beginning players try to grip the bar too hard. When I would teach, I would emphasize that the bar is gripped lightly, between the thumb and the middle finger. The index finger rests very lightly on top of the bar, and the ring and little finger just rest on the strings behind, to help steady the hand and also help dampen the strings. A light (hollow) bar may be somewhat easier for a beginner to grasp and control.
Most courses I've seen spend very little time on holding (controling) the bar, but most beginners learn an acceptable technique fairly quickly. |
