I heard a Don Walser tune on the radio with some real fine steel. I don't have any of his recordings, probably should, but I've heard some great steel picking with the "Pavaratti of The Prairie." So who out there knows who done it?

I think a guy named Scott Walls played for Don Walser for sometime after a short (and stellar!) stint with the Derailers. His playing on Reverb Deluxe is just tremendous, IMO.

I should pick up a couple of The late Don Walser's CD's. Everything I've heard I liked and had some great steel. Saw him once live several years back at a Festival here in Seattle and I got a real kick out of him. He had a good staight up country band and he sang like a bird.

Don't forget that the great Jimmy Day also played live and recorded with Don.

Yes. Scott Walls was the last steel player in Don Walser's Pure Texas Band. It also featured Floyd Domino on Piano, Howard Kalish on Fiddle, Don Keeling on Bass, and Phil F. on drums (cant remember his last name). Scott now plays for the Cornell Hurd Band out of Austin, TX and is at least of their last 4 CDs. All excellent! I do have a compliation CD that features Jimmy Day, Bert Rivera and Scott Walls on different Don Walser songs. Howard Kalish has a cd called "What the Hey", and it was made I think in 2003 or so, and it has 3 songs on there in which Don Walser sings, and I think Howard told me they were the last recordings of him. It also has Scott Walls on steel. You can also hear Don's music on the Robert Duvall movie "Secondhand Lions". I recommend getting any Don Walser CD's. Both Scott and Howard speak very highly of him...I wish I could have gotten to see him before he passed.

Brandon

Thanks for the info. Probably what I've heard would have been Scott Walls, as I'm pretty sure it was from Don's more recent recordings. At any rate I sure liked the playing I heard. Great tone and nice parts.

I think Cindy Cashdollar may have played some non pedal steel and perhaps dobro on the Don Walser album that Ray Benson produced. Scott Walls is a great player. He hails from Dubois, PA, where, I believe, his dad is a steel player. Dubois is also the home town of Tom Mix (Mix Run, PA) and Nashville "A Team" fiddler, Buddy Spicher.

Just found this thread... My Granddad is Skinny Don Keeling. He played bass for Don from 1987ish until Don retired. Most of the early stuff you hear is Jimmy Day, with Bert Rivera on some cuts. Both were members of the band. Jimmy for about 2 years and I believe Bert was there 2 or 3 years after Jimmy went back to nashville in 90 or 91. Scott Walls joined the band in 94 or 95. And yes, Scott is a great player. Extremely fast and clear as a bell. I know Howard was in the band for the full tenure like my grandad. The first drummer I believe was Ronnie brown, then Gil de Los Santos. After that was Phil Fajarto. Also, asleep at the wheel's fiddle player Jason Roberts was a mbr of the band in the late 80's and early 90's. I know he started playing with the band before he could even drive. Growing up around the band I was fortunate enough to be able to hear true country music played by a great group of musicians. As earlier mentioned, Howard's album "what the hey" is definantly worth Checking out. Great album. Also, my grandad released a similiar type album in 1999 featuring the same group of guys. It has Jimmy Day and Scott Walls on steel. I believe it was the second to last album jinny did before he passed. It also features Justin Trevino, Sherri barr, Bucky Buchanan of peoples choice, Rick Mcrae of George strait's ace in the hole band and several others. Search "Texas reunion" if interested or visit skinny don's myspace. Hope y'all enjoyed my little rant. Howard is a forum member and will know this stuff better than I do. Maybe if he see's it he will chime in. Thanks!

Hi Adam,I've played with your granddad Don Keeling
many years ago. I played Bluegrass with the Texas Bluegrass Boys
back in the 60's & 70's and Don would play with us some back then. How is Don doing? Wish I could see him again. Thanks, Leon Campbell

Look at some of these videos if you get the time. I recommend the 4 Country Music Showcase videos and the babes videos, all of which have Scott Walls on the steel. Also the Shelly Lee Alley Tribute videos had Herb Remington on the steel

Leon, Don Walser passed on several years ago. I was lucky enough to see him a couple of times and left with a smile.

Leon, if your referring to my granddad he is doing well. He had a heart attack a few years back but now has a pacemaker and is doing great. he still plays for several bands in the austin area. if you would like to talk to him shoot me a private message and i'll give you his phone number. i'm sure he would enjoy the chat.
