Who has experience or a resource to support any compatibility between these two?

There is a new saddle pickup by Fishman for a Reso that is suggested for use wth the Fishman Aura pedal.

I already have a passive Fishman PU in my Reso and want to know if it will interface with the Aura pedal without issues.

Thanks in advance!

Tim

Tim, we had a discussion on the Jerry Douglas forum awhile back and here are a couple quotes from The Man himself, the one just below on Feb 21:

Quote:
"OK,this is what happened. We recorded the pickup and mic at the same time, and matched the mic's waveform with the pickup, then loaded that reaction into the Aura. The (new under-the-saddle) Fishman pickup will get the maximum results with the Aura. I've run other pickups, Schertler, McIntyre, older version Fishman, through it with lesser results. Even my lapsteels will take on the dobro tone slightly, but not as defined. We are still working on the pickup details. I'll see if we can offer it with the ebonex tops as well. I can tell you that it answers prayers I've had for "mobility with real tone" for years. Go wireless, no mic, and sound like you're playing through a Neumann."

And later in April from Jerry:

Quote:
"the Aura will only reach it's full potential with the pickup we have created the images with. The sound is incredible! I am finally happy with the sound I get onstage. I am completely mobile,no microphone. I create my own dynamics the same way I would in a room with other instruments. Play harder when it's time, back off when it's not. The pickup is easily installed into the spider. Paul has even put setscrews into the back of the spider bridgeslots to keep the pickup tight and it sounds great acoustically as well. That was the last true test. This IS the new technology. Everything is new from here on out. I am putting the finishing touches on the 16 images right now. Everything from Neumann microphones to a Shure SM57."

Wouldn't Fishman's tech support be able to answer that question? I'm sure they're getting lots of questions like this based on the incredible interest shown so far in this new pickup/pedal combination.

Could be I'm misremembering this but in either the Jimmy H. or Mike A. Youtubes didn't one of them say that there was some benefit from running a different pickup into the Aura but it wasn't nearly as happening and it lost its feebdback suppressing properties. I don't think I'm making that up. But who knows. I also don't recall if it was a Fishman Pup or something else that he had tried that caused this remark.

Tim, the new Fishman pickup is also a passive pickup, so no reason why the Aura won't handle yours.

Tobie: My concern was that the new passive PU is saddle based. There is better in direct contact with the string and the pickup.

I was hoping that someone here has used this passive PU (non saddle type) with the Aura for Reso.

I would be interested in soundbyte comparisons between the two types of PU at this point.

Thanks to all for your input!

Tim, you saw my quote from Jerry - so I don't know how to quantify "lesser results."

It seems that just about anyone I have run across so far has gone for the whole package - the new pickup combined with the Aura box.

I have the old Fishman in my Clinesmith, and I think that pickup at some point, is going to fall off the edge of the earth - at one point it was one of the best out there, but the bar was lower on what makes a good dobro pickup.

FROM FISHMAN PRODUCT SUPPORT:

Hi Tim,

This is a tough answer. You should get reasonable results from any piezo type pickup on your reso when used with the JD pedal. If you want to get the perfect match and reproduction of Jerry's tone, the new pickup would be the best choice. If you are committed to Aura, you could purchase the pedal first and audition it for yourself with your setup to see if you are satisfied with the results. I've tried the combination here with several resos using our older pickup and always found the sound better for use of the JD pedal. If you don't like the results, you could then decide to purchase the new pickup to get all the way there.

Best Regards,

Good advice from Frank. The additional advantage of the pedal is that you've got 16 different mic sounds to choose from. If you play in different venues where each has its own acoustic traits, that's not something to be scoffed at! Smile

Has any one scouted out the best street price for the package? Pickup and aura pedal combined.

Thanks

To answer the original question:

I have played a Fishman (original) passive equipped guitar through the Aura pedal. My impression is it does not quite have the definition of the new pickup, however, it sounds quite nice. You will NOT be able to drive the volume levels up as high as the original pups will be more prone to feed back.

I have also played the Schertler, McIntyre and Lace (magnetic) pickups through the Aura. The Schertler was the best of the bunch. The McIntyres don't have the output to drive the box properly and the Lace was a hoot!

Those are all my personal experiences, playing guitars in the shop through the same Fishman Loudbox Performer setup we did all the videos with.

Howard didn't mention it, but Beard sells the Aura pickup and pedal, and also an adjustable spider that works well with the pickup. Or you can send your instrument to them for installation and full setup.

Unfortunately in a seperate thread, Howard answered that there are currently no 8 string versions in the works. Sad

Seems like it would be so easy to just extend the bridge saddles and piezo elements a little bit for 8 strings.

I guess if the demand is not there though, the tooling up doesn't pay off.

If possible, run direct through the PA. Explanation to follow.

I bought the pedal and had Beard install Aura pickups in my two Gold Tones. Here's the history of my experience.

The first Aura pickup was installed in my maple guitar, before I sent off the mahogany. Really liked the sound but couldn't tell anything until I got onstage. I played it around the house through a Crate 1250 amp designed for acoustic instruments. I did get a moderate tendency for feedback at mid-level volumes in my music room, even adjusting the pedal per the directions. But the dobro tone was right there, big time.

The mahogany guitar had the passive Fishman donut pickup already installed. Played through the pedal it yielded acceptable tone, but not like the Aura. I sent the mahogany guitar to Beard for Aura installation as well.

Then came the Murphey Christmas tour. I brought the maple Gold Tone. I was playing through backline amps, always miked, none of which were designed for acoustic instrument use. Feedback at first was problematic (a "D" note in the low register set it off); I had to play at really low levels and relied extensively on floor monitor placement. I had daily phone conversations with Cindy to compare notes. She said "you gotta go DI (direct in to PA from pedal)." When I ditched the amp (or kept it on super-low volume) and went direct through the board, the clouds parted and the world of reso tone opened up to me.

For the next tour, Elko NV, I used the mahogany guitar, again with a small amp but only for my monitor purposes, and also having a large floor monitor, and running DI from the pedal right into the PA. The amp was not miked. With this setup, NO feedback problems and EXCELLENT volume headroom.

In my experience, the maple guitar cut through in the high strings just fine but didn't have the bass response up the neck that I prefer, it kind of lost its resonance. The mahogany guitar really behaved beautifully across the tonal spectrum. Bear in mind that I played a C6 tuning (CEGACE), higher pitched than standard G.

Steve Weisberg (guitarist/dobroist for John Denver), and Drew Phillips and Joey McKenzie (of the Quebe Sisters), all told me that the dobro sound out front was fantastic, it cut through well, and was completely realistic and acoustic-sounding.

I called Howard about an 8-string version. There isn't one available at the moment, but I will get one when there is. I want to go to an 8-string A6 tuning, with a mahogany Auldridge/Beard.

A cool thing Wink about using a C6 is this: After one show, my old friend Steve Weisberg said "Say, uh... I was looking at Murphey's hands and your hands, and uh, the chords he was playing and your bar placement didn't jive... and uh... there were diminished chords you hit and... oh hell, what tuning were you using, anyway? Laughing

"Why, A minor 7th, of course" I replied. When his eyes rolled back I said, "well, C6 to you, Steve." We had a good laugh about that.
