Norman did just fine. He was a little overwhelmed the first day I think. We had a jam session at the motel that night and he was a little nervous. But after a few songs he composed himself and came across as a true professional. And his lovely wife is quite a hula dancer. I hope we made them both feel at home and wish them much aloha.

Andy, you forgot to tell Baz that Norman had his photo on the front page of the local newspaper. I gave him a copy of it.
A really nice convention. The cream of the crop of steel players were all there. Can't get too much better than that.

I thought that it was one of the better conventions in Winchester, although they are all great.

Eddie Palama brought the 'aloha spirit', his fine steel guitar playing and his smooth singing voice.
What a pleasant surprise he was. Surprised

Eddie was influenced by Gabby Pahinui and other greats. He was very personable and enjoyable to talk with. He could "talk story" like you woundn't believe, as they say in Hawaii.

And of course, what can you say about Paul Kim. Exquisite Hawaiian falsetto along with superb Hawaiian steel playing. It doesn't get any better. Cool

And he has a little mischievious steak in him. He was a lot of fun. Maybe he has been hanging around L.T. Zinn too much. Winking

Then there was magnificent playing, old Hawaiian style, by Herbert Hanawahine. Nobody, I mean nobody, can outdo him on "Moana Chimes". He will make you take notice of what real Hawaiian steel guitar playing is. His playing will make you have "cheekin skin" double times.

My only regret is that I cannot bring to you the sounds of the steel guitar playing by the Hawaiian group in this convention as well as others. Sad

If you heard it, you would never miss a convention like this. Smile

You should be making plans to come to Winchester next year. The convention will be the first Thursday through Saturday after July 4th.

I would have to ditto Don's comments, and add that not only did I enjoy the Islander's Music, they took the time to share their expertise on special movements and vamps that only they can. Truly was a great convention, and Oh yes, Don you were pretty darn good yourself.

Gerald, in answer to your questioin about the new motel, it was wonderful. The rooms were large with either twin queens or one king size bed. In room refrigerators and microwaves, large flat screen tv's, coffee pots, iron and ironing board. Some rooms even has jacuzzies. The continental breakfast was more than coffee and pastries. Included were waffles, biscuits & gravy, fruit, rolls, bagles, cereal, orange and apple juice. There was some jamming in the rooms but you had to keep it down. Frank Brandenburg and Phil Bender were shut down twice. They had a metting room and were charging $25 per hour for it's use. However they let us use it free of charge. Oh yea, did I mention the indoor swimming pool and exercise room. Needless to say, it was booked solid every night. I did not see the old underpass motel rooms but from what I understand they have all new beds and door knobs on both sides of the doors. And, starting in August, they will be breaking ground for a new restaurant where the gazebo now sits. I think it will be a steak house. So guys, don't miss out on next years convention. We are going back to the old time of the first Thursday, Friday and Saturday after the fourth of July.

Everything about the new Randolph Inn is wonderful. Peg and I had one of their suites which consisted of two rooms and bath. First room, as you enter, had a hideaway bed/sofa, large easy chair, table w/lamp, microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker and large flat screen TV mounted on the wall. Next was the beautiful bathroom. Then the next room was the bedroom with king bed, bedside table w/lamp, desk and another large flat screen TV mounted on the wall.
Also, a large closet w/folding mirror doors. Really nice.
Really nice continental breakfast, lobby and free internet so you can check your e-mail or send e-mail every day.
We didn't get a chance to check out the old motel but I understand that a lot of renovation took place there. I just wonder if they put hooks for your clothes on the inside of the bathroom doors. The last several years that I stayed there it was just a place to sleep,--nothing fancy and not too much good about it. It was steadily going into the dumps.
Rates at the old motel are quite a bit lower than the Randolph Inn. But you can still have the continental breakfast even if you stay at the old motel.
Can't wait until next year's convention.

I Endorse Wally, Don & Andy on their impression of the "Winchester Aloha Week". A great time was held by all. The Hawaiian Guests, Eddy Palama, and Paul Kim were exceptional (Paul's singing of the traditional Hawaiian Songs was exceptional). The Mainland Hawaiians, Duke/Laverne Ching, Herbert/Joanne Hanawahine, Bobby Ingano & Bernie Endaya were outstanding as usual. Of course the Haole Hawaiians, L T Zinn, Ivan Reddington, Phil Bender, Doug Smith, Frank Brandenburg did a great job as well. Then, also, we had Norman/Aldyth Fletcher from Spain via England who were suprise attendees -- Aldyth dazzeled us with her Exotic Hula and Norman with his inimitable styling of Hawaiian and Standard Selections on the Steel Guitar. Very Happy

We are all looking forward to next year.
