Over the past 48 hrs, my email address has been used by someone to send out literally thousands of spam emails. I know because I am now deleting HUNDREDS of 'Undeliverable' bouncebacks from my own Spam folder every few minutes! No sooner do I delete my Spam box than I have 5-15 more appearing. If I walk away for 30 minutes, I have over 150 more waiting for me! Arrrgggghhh! Is there anything I can do other than change my email? I think not...

Jim, I had the exact same problem a year and a half ago, check this old thread:

Does the bouncing emails use your exact address, or is the part before the @ different from your real address?
I managed to stop most of the mails that bounced back to me by changin a setting at the site hosting my website/email address, so that I would only receive emails directed at my exact address. Perhaps you have a similar option somewhere?

Besides that you'll just have to wait it out I think, these things usually pass after a while...

If possible, create a new email account to replace the one that is on the spambot lists. Test it for proper functioning, then begin notifying your personal contacts and subscriptions about it, one at a time. Wait two or three days between notifications. If you notify a particular contact and find spam arriving the next day, you can deduce they are botted with an email harvesting Worm or Trojan.

If your contacts are botted let them know about it so they can try to fight them off. If it is the Storm Trojan, which contains a harvester module, tell them to run Windows Defender, with the newest definitions, or Spybot Search and Destroy, or SuperAntiSpyware.

Discard the newly spammed account and create another new account. When you know it is safe to use and with whom, enter your profile at the SGF and update your contact email address.

Alternately, try MailWasher Pro, which I use to fend off incoming spam and bounce messages. I write custom filter rules for MailWasher Pro, which you can download and install. They either manually or automatically delete known spam from the email server.

MailWasher only works with desktop email clients. It stands between the email server and your desktop. If you use a POP3 email client like Outlook (Express), Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird, Eudora, etc, to download your AOL email, then MailWasher will work for you. If you download your email through a browser, or AOL interface, it won't work at this time. In that case you can create multiple throwaway AOL addresses as needed.

Wiz,

I'm now with DSL Verizon and in both Mailwasher and Eudora I had to change both POP3 and SPMT settings to INCOMING and OUTGOING; otherwise nothing worked. Verizon didn't explain this well on my introduction to Verizon.

Anyway, MW still seems to be working OK, in spite of it not being POP3 now. Oh Well

WHAT? Please describe exactly what they had you configure for your POP3 email account.

Include such details as:
Incoming POP3 mail server name
Outgoing SMTP mail server name
Incoming port #
Outgoing port #
Is mail encrypted?

Do not post the account user name or password, just the mail server login details.

My computer, Dell, XP with all the updates was beginning to get real slow. My C drive-120G is a little over half full. I started by deleting some programs I haven't used lately. Then ran McAffe. Then I ran Adaware, then a Uniblue registry cleaner. After that I downloaded Spybot and gave it a shot. Wow. It found 126 instances, which I believe were cleaned up. It even took out the adaware program.

I must say Spybot is the ticket. My computer runs faster, at least I can live with it.

I also added a 3rd external hard drive for backup. At Best Buy they were $119 for a 250 Gig. I went to the internet. For $6 more I got an acomdata firewire 500 Gig.

Probably if I'd spent a lot of time looking I would have found it cheaper, but I'm happy.

OK, Wiz.

They really didn't have me configure anything. I had to ask them.

I related to them what the errors stated. They appear at the bottom of the Eudora screen when they occur.

First off, I had to check off AUTHENTICATE. I never had to do this with Comcast. VRZ said that I had to check off authenticate. So I did.

Then, they told me instead of this (my old comcast data - pop3.comcast.net) to change it to INCOMING.VERIZON.NET and the same for SMPT - change it to OUTGING.VERIZON.NET.

I use Mailwasher and had to go in there and change those IN/OUT settings as above.

Wiz, as far as incoming & outgoing port numbers go, I don't know where to access this info. It's not readily available in all of the menus in Eudora. I pretty much know my way around Eudora, by now, and haven't bumbled upon that info. Steer me there and I'll do my best.

I don't believe my mail is encrypted. Really don't know what that's all about. I see it from time to time, but I always do not check it off.

If you want any more in-depth info from MOIthen you'll have to explain things a little better.

But you are the WizMaster, and I am the frog.

Let me know, cuz we can all learn from this; What those powers-that-be, have up their sleeves.

You are still accessing your incoming email from a POP3 email server and sending via a POP3 SMTP server. I misunderstood your comment about changing both servers. Whenever you change ISPs your email servers also change. Each email server has a unique location, but many accounts. Everything is as it should be.
