In this clip , Mel Torme sings an into that I've never heard before. Did he write it specially for this occasion or is it part of the original song that just doesn't usually get sung (like a lot of intros) ?

It's not in the original sheet music, so I'm gonna guess it's just a Mel Torme embelishment, a' la' Doug Cross.

thanks for that confirmation - the sheet music would surely not miss out any of the original.
It was a very nice embellishment - not surprising from the man who wrote "Born To Be Blue" Very Happy
Can you explain the "Doug Cross" reference ?
