I recognize there has been some controversay here on the Forum about JERRY BYRD's C6th/A7th tuning.....or whatever you might choose to lable it. Either way, I have no problem with what you call it.
In any event, there's a great example of what a skilled player can do with this tuning.....as featured on the jerrybyrd-fanclub.com site on JERRY's MUSIC Page.
The tune is "Tears on my Pillow".........and he plays an entire verse and chorus. It blew me away since this is a different arrangement of the same song by the same artist.
Tell me what YOU think of it. |

Ray, I'm sure the tune is great when played with C6/A7. However, I refuse to listen to it knowing it has a tritone interval in the strings C#-G: any steel guitar tuning that uses the "Devil's Tritone" (C# - G) should be regarded as just another means of weakening our spiritual resolve. This forum has no room for such abominations. |

Boy, that "Devil's Tritone" sounded like pure heaven to me.
Ray, who's the vocalist on that recording? He sounds familar but I can't quite put my finger on who it is. |

That vocalist is CLYDE MOODY!
Jerry has done some of his most fabulous sounding works on Clyde's records; "Too Young"; "I Love You
Because", "Angels Cry".........and "Tears on my Pillow".
I'm glad YOU liked it! Hope I don't upset the entire FORUM. |

Thanks Ray. I'm gonna do a little research on Clyde Moody and see what's available on CD. I wouldn't worry too much about upsettin the members of the Forum since there's over 7000 members now. |

"Devil's tritone"? Isn't that where melodies go and are never heard from again?
Turns out, the song "Maria" from "West Side Story" is based on the devil's tritone interval. |

Actually, it refers to guitars made in China. It's supposed to be, "The Devil's TRICONE!" _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

At some point in time Jerry's C6th/A7th must have been VERY popular.... a few years ago, while going through my folks old music stuff I found a "new" box of Fender:
"Electric Hawaiian Guitar - No.30 (8 String) Set".
The strings (in their original paper sleeves) are numbered "No. 31 - No. 38", and have the string order in the tuning (string #1; string #2...)as well as the pitch of each open string. I was so surprised to find a factory set of strings for this tuning. Must have been the rage sometime in the '50s. For me they are a reminder of my parents, but it is also cool to find a little time capsule like this
Oh yeah, the price marked on the box is $5.00 _________________ Dave Wren

Man..., after reading Mark's post I can't wait to hear this tune using the 'Devil's tritone' and be completely abominated! |

If I understand right, the big man in Nashville at the time was Jerry Byrd C6/A7 E-C-A-G-E-C#. The big man in swing circles was Joaquin Murphey C6/A9 g-E-C-A-G-E-C#-(b)). I'm sure it would have been a very popular tuning under those circumstance. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

Well, this post got me to thinking, so I pulled out the Fender set, and it turns out it looks more like A7th/C6th, with the highest strings the A7th:
1- E
2- C#
3- A
4- G (7th of A7th above; 5th of C6th below)
5- E
6- C
7- A
8- G
Hummmm, guess it's 'cuss Fender was on the left coast _________________ Dave Wren

Ray: Nice to see Clyde Moody's name in a post other than mine ! I was beginning to think I was the only one who knew him or had ever even heard of him. His song Shenandoah Waltz has always been a fond memory of mine.
I had the priviledge of working with him for four or more years before he passed away. He was a fine entertainer who had fallen on hard times with a family disaster. The leader of our band kept him employed until the end and he would appear with us on the eartly morning show from WRAL-TV, Raleigh, NC
called the Daybreak Gang. He also did the club scene with us and public appearances.
Regards, Paul |

when I was subbing in Spades bands Joaquin was using a7 with the G in the middle. He would do a slant using the lower half of the bar to make f# out of the G whenever he felt the song called for a 6th.cc |
