A lover of junk as I am, I came home with a CMI "SG System" SG 212 amp today. It has a few issues like being dirty and some circuit board damage from a capacitor that looks repairable. Anybody familiar with these old amps. Looks like mid 70's by the pot codes. I found a few amp forums that talked OK about them but that's about it. Just curious......... |

Jerry,
I'm quasi-familiar with them. I've messed around with a few of them from time to time. They are kind of neat, kind of funky and definitely "old school".
I've been tempted to buy one. Send some pics if you got'em.

Here it is all cleaned up. The phase shifter still doesn't work right but I hope to get it going soon. The sound is incredible! So is the weight!!!!

I think Maurice Anderson had a SG amp pictured on the covers of several albums from the early 70s.
As I recall they were distributed by Norlan Music who, at the time, also distributed Gibson and MSA among other brands. I just assumed they were a Gibson affiliate of some sort.

I had a brand new one in the 70's, caught on fire on stage one night. The nuts on the bolts that held the transformer up always came off, so I had to use lock tight on them, then it caught on fire. Go figure. Recorded several cuts with it and sounded great, loved the phaser, but much better sound with JBL's. the phaser also came seperate in a footpedal, I"m looking for one of those. My father had one that was in Blue denim, sharp amp. Norlan didn't produce many amps that really caught on, it's a shame.

I'm gonna buy one...one of these days!!! They are funky/neat and built for some serious business. If you show up with one of those, you can tear the house down.

I'm not for sure they would tear the house down, but yet a nice looking case for speakers. I'm not for sure I would try to put it through it's paces unless a schematic is in your hands. Mine required some maintenence. Like a garbage dumpster after the fire. |

The previous owner of this one gigged pretty regular and according to an old set list found in the back played mostly country and country rock. It had a burn on the circuit board where the capacitors hook up that could have very well caused a fire at one time but was repaired crudely. I re-repaired that and touched up a few more cold solder joints. I found a little info on some forums about this amp. One guy said that Gibson sent him a pdf file by request so I followed up on that with a letter of my own to Gibson with no news as of today. It seems basic as amps go I guess. The phase is cool. Sounds like a leslie!. The amp does sound great and has a pretty good driving tone. Very HEAVY!!! The only weak point seems to be the reverb On the highest setting it is a little cheesy. This went right along with the posts on the forum I found. I'll sell or trade this one locally due to the weight and it's age. |
