I don't yet own the new album (with accompanying novella) "I, Flathead" from one of my all-time favorites and musical heroes, Ry Cooder, but I listened to a track on Rhapsody entitled Steel Guitar Heaven.

It was released this past week.

Great stuff!

One of our great musicologists, Ry mentions Joaquin Murphey, Jimmy Day and Paul Bigsby in a bouncy little tune paying tribute to steel guitarists and how life on Earth for them can be tough, but they will have a special setup in a little corner of Heaven.

Ry Cooder - what a guy! Smile

Thanks for the heads up, Mark...

here's a link to listen:

Apparently the album is a "concept" album about a race car driving country singer? There's also a funny song about a dog named "Spayed Kooley"! Gotta love that...

It's the third in the trilogy themed about life in California, and more toward Southern California.

The first album was "Chavez Ravine," and the second was "My Name Is Buddy."

It was a tremendous thrill for me (and I brought along my 20 year old guitar playing son) after "My Name Is Buddy" was released to meet Ry in Marin County at the now closed record store Village Music in Mill Valley, at a meet-and-great and CD signing.

Ry has a an aunt in Mill Valley and would drive up from Santa Monica to visit her periodically. The owner of Village was being forced out because of a dramatic raise in his rent, so one more frou-frou store could move in.

Ry, along with a lot of other people, were not happy about this, so he came up as a show of support and to honor the owner of Village Music.

Listening right now to an interview with Cooder about this CD on WNYC, it can be found here:

Hey Paul, you have now been immortalized for me since you were mentioned in the interview as being a friend of Ry and his quote of your comments regarding the demise of certain aspects of live music.

I figure any friend of Ry's is a friend of mine! Smile

Bobby has a great version on his solo lp recorded in the late seventies... he expertly imitates all the big name steel players...Peter
