A very reasonable suggestion, my friend. Thanks again. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Putting it out on DVD is a fantastic idea!!
It may be difficult to find a better list than your original including Deep Water, Corrina Corrina, Columbus Stockade, Roly Poly and The Kind of Love I Can't Forget.
Unless you could add a detailed study of Night Life (in D) ? Although, this may deserve an entire course. Tab exists for the intro and lead but, you could tab the WHOLE THING, like the "listen to the blues they're playing" section.
With one like "The Kind of Love I Can't Forget" or "Honkytonk Angels", how about some old-timey call-and-response, "backup behind the singer" style riffs, instead of (in addition to) just the melody ?
Another great C6 course would be a collection of Hank Williams songs, another of Patsy Cline. (even though these were originally different tunings) |

Herb, how about "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder? Granted, it's not country and it's not Western Swing, but it swings! Thanks, steve t |

Because you asked..here is my $0.02
As a student I have learned songs in an instructional book should have a purpose. The song teaches a lesson. One song. One certain lesson. the song is not as important as the lesson it should teach, so the title is secondary. You can't pick a popular song just because it is popular. Ask yourself "What lesson will this song teach?"
I imagine it is difficult to determine the level of the tab to bring out the lesson instead of playing it like it should be played. So another question to ask yourself is "what level of student am I trying to instruct?" Will you build from beginner to advanced or address one level of student throughout the book?
It's wonderful to have lessons that are done with popular songs. The student (me) feels they have actually accomplished something when they play a simple tune and someone reconizes it. Difficult accomplishment with the steel, but necessary for the student to stay encouraged to keep on practing.
I look at instruction books for guidance. I have learned many songs that I never heard of before I started taking lessons. It's a simple fact that students don't know where they are going and need direction. If we knew where we were going..we wouldn't need instruction books or teachers. (So don't teach us everything..we won't need you. [joking] )
I think it would be a very difficult balance. I give you kudos for such an undertaking. I will never be more than a poor student at best, but I think I have been a student long enough to have the perspective.
Good luck with it. I will definetly look at it when it comes out. |

Gary, all
My progress has slowed down, I've been busy this summer with other things I like to do. Should get on it by this fall. It will happen, I promise. Most songs and backing tracks have been done, I need to cut the solos and then the tabbing. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Perhaps there is already a C6th coarse that would feature some of Hank Thompsons songs. If not, would you consider adding some of those - any of them are great. Sure would give the VP something to work on too.
PS ---- I sure would like to see a coarse that would give guidance on that 4th pedal (1st on the on the C6th neck) I still haven't found a use for it.

How about Danny Boy? Kind of a slow song with a lot of possibilities for playing style. |

Hi Herb,
I agree with Tamara. The why is just as important as the where (Perhaps more so).
Additionally, notating an arrangement on the Grand Staff, as well as tabbing it, would make it more accessible. I, for one, read standard notation FAR better than I stumble through tab. Although, my inability to read tab keeps from just "quoting" someone else!
Thank you,

Okay, guys, here's the report.
My delay has been due to a couple situations/circumstances that occurred earlier this year. First, I had completely filled up my old computer with files and data, so I thought I'd upgrade to a faster, larger machine. What I didn't realize is that the programs I used on the old machine (running XP) don't work on the new machine (running Vista). Then gigs that were very time consuming came up, and then there are just other things I did this summer that I enjoy doing and did, since my computer situation stifled me anyway.
I also had to decide whether to just tab out songs with no explanations of harmony or theory and how these things relate to the C6 tuning, or whether to get into explanations of chord progressions other than just 1-4-5.
So rather than get bogged down, I just went fishing a lot and played gigs in the evenings.
I recently cleared all the non-instructional data off my old computer so now it's functioning as a recording machine again. But I've now got a very busy November, and a Michael Martin Murphey tour for most of December, so work on teaching materials will have to continue into next year.
Sorry for the delay. Hope it'll be worth it to y'all when it does happen. But if you're absolutely dying to learn C6, I do have tabbed courses based on my Texas Dance Time and Rancho Rhythm Roundup albums, which are all C6 and include some great tunes, as well as rhythm tracks from the albums themselves. These feature Floyd Domino on keys, Howard Kalish on fiddles, and David Biller and Rick McRae on guitars. And I dare say, you'll not find better players to pick with than those fellers. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
