The reason I am asking is that I want to mic or DI my NV400 into a PA system. I have played another club that has a killer PA system and when we use a DI box, there is a lot of hum and the soundman always has to turn my channel slider down in between songs. Lifting the ground on the DI doesn't help. Both of my NV400's do this. I can plug my NV400 into my Peavey PX300 powered speaker and vitually no hum. I'm thinking it's a mismatch of somekind between the preamp out and the DI box.
I would prefer to use the DI box as opposed to a mic. |

If they don't have a PAD (attenuator) to lower the signal level into the PA board that could be the problem. Many PA inputs are setup for the low level microphone levels and if you pump a high "line level" signal into it and it doesn't have a PAD that could be the problem.
I have some XLR in line adjustable pads that I can use between a "line level" amp output like the Preamp Out on a Peavey or the XLR out on amps such as the Nashville 112, and my recording board so it doesn't tend to overload it. My recording board is setup for either a low level mic or instrument level so it has high gain preamp circuits. |

| Please tell me more. Any recomendations on a direct box. I see a few that have a pad switch that have a few different values. I know the one I have used in the past has no pad switch (I believe it was a Rolls). |

If you could find a Peavey EDI direct box that would be the way to go with a Peavey amp. It goes in the speaker line and not the pre amp.

Along with the XLR "in line" pads, I have a Behringer Ultra DI 100 that is a direct box with two 20DB pads (it can have 20DB or 40DB of attenuation).
The Behringer is probably a clone of a high priced DI box.
Although I haven't tried it, one of the features of this DI box is "Direct connection of amplifier outputs with ratings of up to 3000 watts". That would mean it can be connected directly to an amplifier output. |

I ordered a Rolls DB25 DI box. It has a 3 position pad switch ( don't remember the exact level specs but seem to remember one being 40db).
Something interesting. I was talking to the guitar player and he told me that he took a Peavey amp he had (not a NV400) and hooked the preamp out to his PA system with a 50 foot NONSHIELDED cord and it worked great with no noise. We will try that next Sunday as well as the DI box. I am still puzzled about the nonshielded cord though. |
