Just finished watching the ACL(* Austin City Limits) copy I have of the Asleep reunion show taped way back when (the 90's I think) man Lucky Oceans was dancin' on the stage and in the crowd...Cindy Cashdollar was there playing pretty and there was another wild player I think his first name was Wally, cant remember his last name now, played a Williams, but he did some real fast hammer on's and very fast, had a cowboy hat on,playing on the C-6th neck, wild man and real fast...great music, great show...3 keyboard players, six fiddle players,3 steel players, two sax players...and a partridge in a pair tree!Ha! _________________ BMI S-10,3+4,Peavey Vegas 400,15"BW equipped,Goodrich 120,Zoom Studio rack mount-FX,Liberty Resonator,Fender Telecaster,JT-148 Jazz Box,Blueridge BR-180 |

Coulda been Wally Murphy. He played with AATW for awhile (but I think it was in the 80's, not the 90's) and was a speed demon in a big hat. |

We just did a show with AATW Friday in OK, and his current steel player (who's name escapes me) did a fine job on his 4 neck fender...Nice guy too, I told him he wore his hat exactly like Buddy Charelton did w/ET, cocked to one side.
Ray was ( lets say) more grounded than I have ever seen him, and they swang it big time.
Ray also shared the spotlight with everyone. There production guy (Mike) was also cool...cya...Ronnie |

Don't forget Bobby Black. I think he played with AATW in the 80's. Did he attend the reunion ? |

Lotta short-term folks and subs in there over the many years of the band. I think the last person to hang in there for a while before Eddie Rivers was Carco Clave though I seem to recall that he was only with them for between six months and a year. (Somebody help me out. Am I recalling that correctly?) |

AATW had the great "Big" Jim Murphy in the band the last few years of his life, but he was on and off the road because of his health problems. I did a "sub" gig or two myself during that time which was a great pleasure; I saw their very first gig as "Asleep at the Wheel" in 1970 in D.C. and it was a huge influence. When I first moved to Austin in '79 Lucky would have me sit in for a song or two so he could do the dancing and acrobatics that he liked to do. Anybody else ever witness that?
John Ely was in the band for a long time, a very important part of their history and an incredible player. John got really deep into the non-pedal swing styles and is the one who really turned it into a mostly "non pedal" gig I think (Wally Murphy was before him). After John left Ray didn't want to go back to a pedal steel player as he'd had before (though some players including Jim Murphy played both...). That's when Cindy joined. I'm sure that John, Lucky Oceans, and Cindy Cashdollar had by far the longest tenures in the band.
Carco Clave was on the gig for a while before Eddie for sure, I don't know for how long... |
