Depends on your sound crew. Most of the time they don't want to. I do it anytime I can. I have several patches that have panning fx that fade from one side to the other as well as doppler/rotary and 3D sounds. I can talk some of the sound guys to pan one hard left and the other hard right. That way the audience can get the full effect of my hard work programming these things.
Sometimes the other musicians don't like for you to do it either.
Other times, I'm lucky to get miced at all. Depends on the situation and the venue. |

Unless your sound crew is going to run a full stereo mix into the house and pan the mix from the mikes on your speakers hard left and right in the house mix, it's been my experience that it's best in a situation where most of the sound is coming from the PA to just do a mono mix into your stereo rig and use one mike.
I rarely use a stereo setup these days, but I used a stereo setup for years. and I found it mostly useful for recording or for playing in small clubs where the amps aren't miked. |

Thanks, Jerry & Dan for your input, I appreciate your help. I guess i will keep using one mic with our PA setup, It would be one less item to pack up at the end of the night. Thanks,

When I play live, it's not that uncommon for the sound guys to only mic one. The other one I adjust to my own volume so I have a good stage monitor. |

It's been my experience that a great many soundmen are pretty much clueless about miking pedal steel. They take a look at the stereo setup and then ask, "Ummm, can you run this direct?" Happens all the time in the clubs we play. Since I'm really not a big fan of going direct I just tell them to try a 57 off-center in front of the amps. To their credit most of them eventually get things right. |
