Here's a link to a post about my new CD, which has several tracks with me using the SDTT distortion unit for some blues steel. I put it in front of my volume pedal, so it gives me pick sensitive distortion unaffected by the volume I set with my foot.

Have you ever tried any of the Boss stomp box pedals for distortion? How do they stack up against what your using now?
