It's definitely in the ball park. I'd add 5 cents to everything so that the open strings won't sound flat against other instruments.

A perfect major 3rd is about 14 cents flat of the equally tempered meter. 10 cents is a real good compromise, as it sounds in tune but allows for a bit of drift due to temperature, bar pressure, etc. I imagine your tuning sounds pretty darn sweet! Very Happy

If you want your root G to be set to it's ET value ...

D = (+)2 cents sharp of it's ET value
B = (-)14 cents flat of it's ET value
G = 0
E = (-)16 cents flat of it's ET value
B = (-)14 cents flat of it's ET value
G = 0

Hi Bob, yeah it sounds pretty decent. After laboring over many different tunings it feels good to settle into one for now Wink.

By adding 5 you mean this?

D +7.0
B -15.0
G 0.0E -15.0
B -15.0
G 0.0

or this?

D -3.0
B -5.0
G 0.0
E -5.0
B -5.0
G 0.0

How apparent would it be that I were out of tune with other instruments (say guitar, bass, violin, clarinet) if i go with this or the other 2?

D +2.0
B -10.0
G 0.0
E -10.0
B -10.0
G 0.0

B = (-)9 cents flat of it's ET value
G = (+)5 cents sharp of it's ET value
E = (-)11 cents flat of it's ET value

As b0b states ... having the sharps/flats "spread" abit ... will allow the JI tuning more leeway with ET tuned instruments.

It's the relationship of the intervals ... that makes JI tuning sweet ... not the "reference" point.

It seems that guys like Jerry Byrd (pre-electronic tuners) ... simply took the "Hi E" off the rhythm guitarist ... and tuned JI from there.

Neither. Adding 5 cents to all of your numbers gives you this:

D +7.0
B -5.0
G +5.0
E -5.0
B -5.0
G +5.0

See how they straddle the center line? None of the open strings will sound too sharp or too flat compared to an equal tempered instrument. In your original numbers, the -10 cents would tend to sound flat on the open strings.

Your bar position takes care of the problem up the neck, but open strings are a different matter.

Jeff Newman, the master of this stuff, for a long time taught that the E strings of the E9th should be tuned to the center line. Then one day he realized that by raising the root tone a notch, his open strings would be more in tune with other instruments. He republished his chart with new numbers that were higher. All of the intervals were the same, but there were a lot more numbers on the "plus side" of the center line.

ack break out the slide rule Mr. Wizard!! Very Happy

So do I go with Rick's option or Bob's option?

At any time I might play with two guitar players, a violin, cello, trumpet, accordion, upright bass, trombone, clarinet, sax, uke.

should i concern myself mainly with harmonic instruments?

How would you, or can you, tune cents flat or sharp on a Peterson strobe?

A difference of 5 cents is generally inaudible between instruments of different timbres. Your original numbers +5 cents are the way I normally tune. It always sounds in tune with the guitars, bass, harmonica and keyboards that I play with. The accordion is the only instrument you listed that you might have a problem with. They are notoriously bizarre.

Rick's numbers are close to theoretical perfection. I don't tune that way because I'm lazy.
