Kay is branching out into another fretless instrument - the chromatic Harmonica!
Quote: |
I learnt to play the harmonica first and recorded a couple of tunes multitracking with steel for my June 2005 CD album, " Distant Shores". This was recorded while I was living in Singapore. "Carolina Moon" tries to capture the pre-Jerry Byrd style (some call it the 60s Waikiki style). "Dream", Johnny Mercer's lovely tune, was recorded trying to capture the Bud Tutmarc style.
Lap steels: West Coast C6 and Charvel-Jackson electro-acoustic
Harmonica: Hohner Toots Hard Bopper ( inspired by Jean "Toots" Thielemans) |

Nice recording and arrangement.
I'm a fan of tasteful Harmonica and must say: I liked it. |

Thank you for the appreciation, John.... the ultimate might be a steel guitar/harmonica version of Maurice Ravel's Bolero or Grigoras Dinicu's Hora Staccato...
Gerald, loved your reference to this other fretless instrument ha! ha!

Being a fifty year player of chromatic harmonicas, I really do appreciate others who can see the blending abilities and values of this instrument with the steel guitar and other instruments.
When I was playing with an old time sax band a few years ago, they had me play my chromatic 280 and my bass and chord harmonicas several times each evening.
Great job Kay |

I played with a four piece group sometime in the 80's where the other lead instrument was a chromatic harmonica player. He had a stand on which layed about twelve harmonicas of differen't types. He would use a "Throat Mike" and run it through a regular amplifier. He could get big Organ sounds and also played a lot of Swing Jazz and Boogie Woogie. It made a great combination with my Steel. For any of you So. Californians, Mike Fury was on drums and Larry Suttles was on Bass and Vocals. The band leader was Frank James and the Harmonica player was supposed to be his brother but I can't remember the name he went under. |

Wow, the intro sounded just like a Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits intro. That Strat tone is to die for! |

I am going to the Mark Knopfler concert in LA tonight. His rhythm guitar player, Richard Bennett, is an excellent lap steel guitarist. More on that later...

Should be an excellent show Kay. I recently saw a "Soundstage" TV concert of his with Emmy Lou Harris that was quite good. |
