Topic: Audio Clip Of Me Playing My ZB Retro Guitar |

Here's an audio clip of my new ZB retro guitar which was custom built for me by Kevin Hatton and Jerry Jessenden. I recorded this with my ancient little Sony mini-disc recorder, and then used my laptop's primitive Sound Recorder to get it onto my computer so hence the sound isn't recording studio quality however it's still decent enough to give you a good idea of what the guitar sounds like. For anyone who might be interested, I am using Jagwire strings, a Hilton volume pedal, a Boss RV-3, and a Fender Steel King amp. I hope you'll enjoy.

Thanks so much. On the jazz clips here's what I used- On "Will You Still Be Mine"(live with my jazz trio in Brooklyn) I am playing my Gibson L-5s pictured below.
I played this guitar through an older model Acoustic Image Clarus 1R amp into a small Raezer's Edge speaker cabinet with an 8" speaker. All the other jazz tunes were recorded in a recording studio where I played a Gibson L-5 hollow body guitar through an Evans amplifier. I used GHS heavy gauge flatwound strings on all guitars.

Thanks Mike, that ZB sounds every bit as good as it looks. I think you have a winner!! As soon as I hit the lottery, I will get one from Kevin too. Nice work from Kevin also. I think Zane Beck would be proud of Kevins work too.

Thanks very much. Sorry I wasn't able to post a clip sooner, but better late than never. I'm very glad you enjoyed the clip, and a very special thanks to Kevin Hatton, and Jerry Fessenden for doing an absolutely superb job of building this guitar.

On reflection in listening to this ZB clip, I noticed that my syncopation and timing are a bit off in spots due to my making the recording in a hurry because I was anxious to post it as soon as I could. I've only been playing the pedal steel for two years, and have a long way to go. The purpose of the clip however was not to showcase my rather average playing, but to demonstrate how the guitar sounds, and in this respect I believe I was successful. Thanks to all of you for your kind words.

Bill, How's it goin! Those Scarlatti pieces are my own transcriptions. Jimmy Crawford once asked me who my favorite classical composer was, and I told him that it was Scarlatti. He scratched his chin, and then said "Scarlatti?... I think I was vaccinated for that last year". By the way, I still listen to that CD of your bass playing you sent me, and I think you are one of the greatest bass players in the world! |

Your steel playing is really coming along. With your musical background, all you have to do is spend a lot of time sitting on your butt (practicing).

Hey,thanks Russ. I always loved that little solo too. I never heard that solo on any recording. I found it on an Ernest Tubb video on the internet and figured it out by listening + watching Charletons hands. Here's the link where you can hear Charleton playing it with ET.

| Sounds very good MIke. While I like the fat sounds of modern steels I often wish I could get the sound of the ZBs. While at the site I listened again to your guitar playing. I can only describe it as awesome. I started playing guitar some time in the forties and made a decent living at it for many years, but I can't comprehend how anyone can pick like that. You play more in one song than I can play in a week. |

Thanks alot! I don't play the guitar much anymore since I discovered the pedal steel. I still do some jazz gigs on guitar but at this point I am much more into practicing the steel. I need to get into a band with my steel at this point. I feel confident and ready to do it.

Sounds great Mike. Makes me wish I still had my ZB.
BTW, though I can't speak for Chris, I did a quick search of the forum and have found some examples of him saying he LIKES Garcia's steel playing, so I'm pretty sure he's being complimentary.
