Hello everyone,

I'm a newcomer to steel (about 3 years on a 1950 Magnatone 6-string lap and this May I picked up a Fender student pedal steel) and after a couple months of reading a lot of informative and entertaining posts on the forum, I decided to join up.

I've been lucky enough to have some great lessons from some respected forumites - a couple with Ricky Davis on lap steel a while back and most recently a couple with Herb Steiner on pedal. But aside from the knowledge they've generously shared, I've got a lot of catching up to do when it comes to being an educated steel & country music listener. I'm coming at this from a ["recovering"] rock/jazz guitarist's point of view, so at least a lot of the theory & fundamentals are there! ha ha

Anyhow, wanted to let you all know that this forum has been really impressive - it's the best example I've seen of a real functioning "community" on the web: sharing tips, buying and selling gear, etc. I'm happy to be joining up!

Best,
Nathan DeLacretaz

You've got some excellent resources in Ricky and Herb. You're a lucky guy.

Thanks very much, Joey, Janice, and Ricky. I plan to bug everybody on the forum with plenty of questions! Hopefully I won't sound TOO amateur! Worst case, you serious steelers may get some good chuckles as this "city boy" tries to get oriented. ha ha

Ricky: first off, I don't know if I ever thanked you properly for getting me going in the right direction on lap steel. That made a tremendous difference! And you're right - I need to get out to more shows these days. I guess the jump up to 10 strings from 6 has me a little tied up - and now months have flown by... Who are you playing with over the next couple of weeks?

I'll see ya soon, Ricky. With a little more practice, I may be able to ask ya some good questions. I wanted to tell you that your turnaround in the Ray Price section of the "Legends" tune just kills me every time. I sat down and learned my own simplistic version of it - love it when you can hold those common tones from chord to chord.
